OVER 17,000 CONFEDERATE HEROES ARE BURIED AT RICHMOND'S OAKWOOD CEMETERY
You can help improve their final resting place
![]()
Soldiers from every Confederate state are interred in the Confederate section of Oakwood. Many of the wounded and sick who perished at Chimborazo Hospital were taken to Oakwood, and casualties from First Manassas through the end of the war are buried there. The Oakwood Confederate Cemetery Trust, Inc., was formed to use an initial $30,000 grant and annual grants of approximately $12,000 approved by former Governor George Allen and the General Assembly for the Confederate section of Oakwood. The Oakwood Confederate Cemetery Trust, Inc. works in cooperation with the City of Richmond and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources to raise private funds and to make improvements at Oakwood. We are a 501c3 tax-exempt organization.
To date, over 2,000 of the original grave markers have been straightened and realigned, and the gazebo has been renovated. Funds and labor have been donated to improve the hedging around the cemetery, and much clearing of brush and new planting has occurred. One hundred and fifty feet of decorative iron fencing has been placed by the entrance to the Confederate section, and a historical highway marker has been placed by the gate. Future plans include continued straightening of the markers, restoration of the soldiers' obelisk, and the erection of a monument to the unknown soldiers buried there.
