He married on 17 April 1897 in West Point, Georgia, Lulu Belle (Foster) Smith, born 1 December 1878/79 in Milltown, Alabama; died 11 July 1941 in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas; buried in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas, Junction City Cemetery; daughter of Sebron Marion Foster and Mary Ione (Howard) Foster.

Notes for Otis Arnold Smith

    Otis Arnold Smith worked in the saddle shop at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was a harness maker and saddler and was active in the Baptist Church. He was of medium height and medium build, had gray eyes and dark hair. (information from his WW I draft registration) He also ran the saddle shop and was a quartermaster at Fort Riley, Kansas. He lived at 404 W 17th St in Junction City, KS in 1918.

In the 1930 census Otis was a saddler and worked for the Civil Service. They lived in Junction City, Kansas.

    Lulu Belle was a second cousin to Steven Collins Foster of Song writing fame.

    Evans lived at 404 W 17th Street in Junction City, Kansas 12 September 1918. He was a delivery man for John Knapp at 515 N. Washington St., Junction City, Kansas. His description on his WW I draft registration was short, medium build, brown eyes, brown hair. Evan's second wife's name was Rena.

Notes for Otis Austin Smith

    Austin (the name he went by) was a very good craftsman. He could do anything such as carpentry or auto upholstery and he also had many other skills and was also a pilot. Later in life he worked for a new car dealer in San Bernardino, California as a Service Manager and in the summer months he and Gladys managed their own cabins, the "Fawnview Cabins" in Fawnskin, Big Bear Lake, California. They lived in Southwest Los Angeles for many years, moving about 1948/50 to Fawnskin. At this time they bought the malt shop and later sold that and bought the Fawnview Cabins. They sold the cabins just before Gladys took sick and died. They had retired and were living in San Bernardino. They celebrated fifty years of marriage in 1968. After Gladys’s death, Austin remarried about 1974, Mrs. Gladys West. They were married only six months when Austin took sick and died.

    Austin and Gladys lived at 1325 W. 73rd St. in Los Angeles, CA in 1930. They were both married at an early age, he was 17 and she was 16 years of age. Gladys's father and mother, Otto S. Smith and Laura C. Smith were living with them as was Glynn, Gladys’s youngest brother. Austin's occupation was an auto shop upholsterer and Otto S. Smith was a building carpenter. Glynn was a baker, working in a bakery.

Notes for Gladys Mary Smith

    Gladys, with her husband, Austin Smith, owned the Fawnview Cabins at Fawnskin, California in Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains for many years. She died of lung cancer. Gladys was said to have been the prettiest girl in town. (Junction City, Kansas) Gladys and Austin married quite young and soon had a family. They lived with her parents in Junction City until they could make it on their own. They were sweethearts from their Sunday School days. They, as a couple, were liked by everyone and fun to be with.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at the Thousand Oaks Christian Fellowship Church in Newbury Park, California. He married (1) Shirley Mae (Dodson) Smith; (2) Margaret (Shores) Smith.

+ 31 ii Margaret Gladys5 Smith, born 2 October 1920 in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas; died 23 January 1996 in Riverside, Riverside County, California; buried in Evergreen Memorial Park, Riverside County, CA. She married (1) Dwain E. Livingston; (2) Alpheus Miles Jennings.

 

21. Mamie Lou4 Smith (Otis Arnold3, John Evans2, West G.1), born 8 Aug 1906 in Kentucky. She married on 17 March 1926 in Grand Isle, Nebraska, Horace Greely Prescott, born about 1903 of Lynch, Nebraska.

Smith, born about 1915; (2) on 15 October 1942 Patricia (Adair) Smith born 12 September 1920 in Kansas; died 12 October 1993 in San Diego, San Diego County, California. At the time of her death she was married to a Mr. Moon.

Notes for Carl Clinton Smith

    Carl Clinton Smith died of Leukemia at the age of 40 years. In the 1930 census Carl was a clerk in a grocery store in Junction City, Geary County, Kansas.

Notes for Robert Theodore Smith

    Bob was a US Army Veteran of WW II. He was very talented in many things. He worked for Helms Baking Company after WW II and was one of their top salesman. In the 1960's he had a Farmers Insurance Agency. He has sold cars, trucks and numerous other things and was quite successful. He and Marge lived in Simi Valley, California for many years and their house was heavily damaged in the Northridge, California earthquake of January 17, 1994.

October 2005 update: Bob has passed away at his home in Newbury Park, California. He was cremated and there was a memorial service on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Thousand Oaks Christian Fellowship Church, 1200 Lawrence Dr., Newbury Park, California.

    Shirley Mae Dodson died of cancer. At the time of her death she was married to Henry Albert Hindelang.

    Marge has owned her own cosmetic business, Beauty Plus in Moorpark, CA. In earlier years she worked for Hughes Aircraft in Southern California. She is now retired.

Notes for Margaret Gladys Smith

    Margaret was married at "The Little Church Around The Corner" in Inglewood, California by the Rev. Chamberlain. Her brother Robert was best man and Midge Wilson was her maid of honor. There were 100 people in attendance. She was married during WW II, so the groom had to returned to his base in Texas. Margaret joined her new husband, Dwain Livingston, in six weeks at Florence, So. Carolina and they traveled until 1953. They were divorced in March 1959 and it was final in September 1960. Margaret married in 1980, Al Jennings. Margaret and Al lived in a large mobile home park at 4000 Pierce St. in Riverside, California. Margaret graduated from George Washington High School in Los Angeles, California in 1938. She went to Metropolitan Business College full time after high school graduation. During the 1930's her family lived in Los Angeles, California. Margaret died of kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes.

    Services for Margaret L. (G.) Jennings, 75 will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Acheson and Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside. She died Tuesday of kidney failure at Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center. Friends may call at the mortuary from 4 until 9 p.m. Friday. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park in Riverside. Mrs. Jennings, who was born in Junction City, Kan., lived in Riverside 42 years. She was a senior stenographer for the Riverside County clerk's office until she retired in 1971. She graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1938. Mrs. Jennings, who lived in Iran from 1947 until 1951, was the author of a book, "Life in Iran Before the Ayatollah." She was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Emblem Club and The Thursday Nighter's Dance Club in San Bernardino. She enjoyed golf, bridge and dancing. Mrs. Jennings is survived by three daughters, Diana and Irene, both of Riverside, and Sandra of McLean, VA; three sons, Robert of Riverside, David of Honolulu and Tom of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Smith of Simi Valley.

Notes for Dwain E Livingston

    Dwain is retired from the US Air Force. He enlisted in September 1939 at Fort Riley, Kansas at the age of 20 years. In 1945-1951 he was stationed in Teheran, Iran and was private pilot, technical advisor and mechanic to the Shah of Iran, in a US Military Mission under General Robert Crow. He was discharged September 1960. He has since remarried and lives in Kansas. (He is now deceased)

DWAIN E. LIVINGSTON, 83, Manhattan, died Sept. 1 at the VA hospital in Topeka.

    He was born Nov. 8, 1918 in Manhattan. He was raised in Junction City. In 1939, he joined the US Army and later transferred to the US Air Force. During his tour of duty in the air force, he was a Crew Chief Master Sergeant for the Shah of Iran and received the Homoyan (sp?) Medal. He was in WW II. He retired from the Air Force in 1960. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association until the time of his death.

Mr. Livingston is survived by his wife Helen Livingston of Manhattan.

Graveside memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ft. Riley Post Cemetery. Burial will be at Ft. Riley Post Cemetery.

Notes for Alpheus Miles Jennings

    Retired from the US Air Force in 1962 as a Lt. Colonel. He was inducted May 11, 1942 at OCS, Miami Beach, Florida. He died of Pancreatic Cancer.

Eulogy, Alpheus M. Jennings, Lt. Col. (Retired)

Known to friends and loved ones as "Al" or "Coach", Col. Jennings was born on July 1, 1912 in East St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in nearby Murphysboro, Illinois. Al attended the University of Illinois, earning a Master's Degree and serving a 6 year term as Assistant Gymnastics Coach before joining the United States Air Force. He spent 20 years in the service of his country before retiring in 1962, accepting a position as swimming and water polo coach at Polytechnic High School in Riverside, CA, remaining there until his final retirement in 1974. Al was active in the community, belonging to the Riverside Elks Club, the Retired Officer's Association, and the Letterman's Association at the University of Illinois. Al also loved dancing, and was a member of the De Anza Dance Club and the Thursday Niter's Dance Club, together with Marge Livingston Jennings, his beloved wife for the last 15 years. Al is survived by his wife Marge; Two children, Sandra Lee Jennings and Tom Jennings; his step children Bob, Dave, Diana, Irene and 15 grandchildren. As an officer, coach, and father, Al touched the lives of countless people who loved him, looked up to him, and will cherish his memories. Al will be interred beside Cora Jane Jennings, his first wife and the mother of his two children.
