In 1946 my father was a Major in the Army (he was a National Guard Officer called to active duty in January 1941). He was stationed in Wurzburg Germany as the DP (Displaced Persons) Officer and was responsible for several million DPs. Our family joined him in Germany in January 1947. The Kale family had four boys and two girls at that time, I was the middle kid.

For two years I went to Wurzburg Dependents School and graduated from the 8th grade there. My last year in Germany was spent in Nurnberg High School (The old school), as there was no American High School in Wurzburg at that time. I would have been graduating in 1952.

In June 1949 we went back to the States. I graduated from High School at Trenton, New Jersey (Trenton High School) in 1952. While in high school I joined the New Jersey Army National Guard during the Korean War at age 17.

I spent five years as an enlisted man, progressing from Pvt to MSGT in the Field Artillery, married a great girl in 1956, and received a commission as a 2LT in 1957. I spent 28 years full time with the New Jersey Army Guard in various positions. I now have two boys: one 35, one 28.

I retired in 1989 from the Army as a full Colonel with 37 years service. I am now trying to build a Militia Museum in Lawrenceville, New Jersey with a story line telling the history of the New Jersey Militia from before the Revolutionary War to the present.

My older brothers and sister were also part of the first students at Nurnberg High School when it started: Barbara, Richard (Dick) and Herbert (Bub).
