ABC News: Man Says 7-Year-Old Joke Led to Killing

ABC News: Man Says 7-Year-Old Joke Led to Killing

A man shot a former co-worker to death on Easter because he was offended by a joke told seven years ago, authorities said Monday.

Stanford Douglas Jr., 29, was arrested on murder charges Sunday after a two-hour standoff with police. He allegedly shot William Berkeyheiser, 62, three times in the chest and shoulder on March 27 at Berkeyheiser's suburban home.

Prosecutor Diane Gibbons said that Douglas told police he had been thinking about killing Berkeyheiser since 1998, when the two men worked at a Philadelphia nursing home and Berkeyheiser told a joke that offended Douglas.

The prosecutor would not say what the joke was.

The downside: This joke was clearly hurtful.

The upside: It was also clearly memorable.

Pabst Brewing Company

Pabst Brewing Company

Wow, Pabst has a really cool website with old timey photographs of their beer cans, history info and such. I also found out that pabst owns schmidt's AND schlitz. and colt 45. and a bunch of other malt liquors and whatnot. cooool.

also just watched kiss of the dragon. loved that movie always just because of the cool shit that jet li does. here's a short but incomplete list of why jet li rules in this movie

- he kills someone who is trying to machine gun him by kicking a billiard ball directly into his forehead
- he blows someone in half by thowing a grenade (which was origonally thrown at him) back into one of the henchman's sleeves
- he uses those damn acupuncture needles to parylize people, do other cool stuff, kill the final dude and make him bleed outta his eyes
- he does the whole ninja-like now-you-see-me-now-you-dont- because-i'm-really-good-at-jumping-away-and-hiding type thing a few times

and just in general:

- he looks totally badass, he never loses his cool. he never even takes a direct hit from a baddie. except maybe once.
- he speaks decent english
- his movies are always dark and brooding vs. jackie chan who does the whole slapstick thing (still awesome, but not badass)
- he's like one of the only big martial artists left in american movies

ok i'm going to go read jerk city. later.

Civics Student...or Enemy of America?

AlterNet: Wal-Mart Coverage: Civics Student...or Enemy of America?

Cory Doctorow: Wal-Mart called the police on a high-school student who brought in a pic of a homemade anti-George Bush poster for photo-finishing. The Secret Service went to the kid's high-school and confiscated the poster.

Jarvis had assigned her senior civics and economics class "to take photographs to illustrate their rights in the Bill of Rights," she says. One student "had taken a photo of George Bush out of a magazine and tacked the picture to a wall with a red thumb tack through his head. Then he made a thumb's-down sign with his own hand next to the President's picture, and he had a photo taken of that, and he pasted it on a poster..."

An employee in that Wal-Mart photo department called the Kitty Hawk police on the student. And the Kitty Hawk police turned the matter over to the Secret Service. On Tuesday, September 20, the Secret Service came to Currituck High.

"At 1:35, the student came to me and told me that the Secret Service had taken his poster," Jarvis says. "I didn't believe him at first. But they had come into my room when I wasn't there and had taken his poster, which was in a stack with all the others."

Smoking Associated With Lower IQ

Smokers often say that smoking a cigarette helps them concentrate and feel more alert. But years of tobacco use may have the opposite effect, dimming the speed and accuracy of a person's thinking ability and bringing down their IQ, according to a new study led by University of Michigan researchers.

Boycott AIM Launched

Boycott AIM is a project to descibe the harms of AOL Instant Messenger and promote free, opensource alternatives.

from the site:
"AOL has released a beta of AIM Triton. Though it's not completely finished yet, it is still available for download on the AIM website. As it has in the past, AOL will likely make this upgrade a requirement. What's wrong about this? Well, AIM Triton has even more spyware than past versions of AIM for starters. In addition, the adverisments are more obtrusive, it is bloated and on slower computers (and those already destroyed due to inadequate security precautions) it will really hog resources, and install obtrusive programs.

More information on the risks AIM Triton can be found on the 'Why?' page. Alternatives can be found on the 'How' page."

I'm already using google talk as an alternative to AIM, if you have it, add TomHavok to your buddy list.

Week Ends.

Yeah, the week is over. Last night was thirsty Thursday at and we had a bonfire to celebrate. Bunch of kids went, yay. No pictures though, it was uuhh completely pitch black out. Which is kind of hard to deal with when Greg is drunk and you need to somehow get him over a small waterfall. Luckily it's really dry so the waterfall wasn't, uhh, running. Unluckily, the dryness is probably over and it's going to rain all next week-- which I found out from hanna during her radio show.

Tonight there's some kind of free show and The Quiet Life is playing. Not really sure what kind of band they are, but the only things that are popular around here are indie rock and post hardcore bands. Probably indie since there is a seperate hardcore show going down at the St. Thomas Aquinas church on North Eagleville road. I guess the free show is just at someones house--so they're going to have a keg. But the last show at someone's house got broken up, and I don't doubt that might happen again, especially with the keg. I'm probably not going to pay for beer there--but we'll see what happens. It makes me angry when parties get broken up, but when SHOWS get broken up--it makes me want to punch a baby.

Oh yesterday I made hamburger pizza which is FUCKING AMAZING. here's the recipe. I'm quite the cook these days, and it really does taste like a big mac. I also made my own sauce for it using this and converting it down for 3 servings rather than 6. Also used Mrs. Dash to season the meat. It's easy enough for a college kid if you're able to brown meat, cut cheese, and pre-heat an oven... although this is too difficult for some, I'm sure. I know some specific people that something like this would be out of the question for. Ramen or die!

Wikipedia corrects Encyclopedia Britannica

Those who have voiced skepticism over the reliability of information found in Wikipedia should take note of this. The collaboratively assembled encyclopedia maintains a page devoted to correcting errors in its chief offline competitor, the venerable Encyclopedia Britannica.

This is just fucking funny, and shows where exactly where we're going with the internet within a few years. Guys exciting shit is going down and you don't even know it!

Parties, fun, pictures, and more

gregs summer party
Originally uploaded by nukage.
So, the semester is in full swing now. lots of homework, lots of parties, lots of good times. I've uploaded a lot of my older photos on Flickr since it's much cooler than webshots and I already had a yahoo mail account (if you have a yahoo account you dont need to sign up for flickr). It's got a handy uploading program (much more streamlined than the webshots one) and its fairly innovative. You can post to your blog or livejournal directly from flickr, which is nice. You can also have your photos go directly there as you upload them. Then there's this cool 'badge' thing which is a little flash slideshow of your recent pics that you can put on your website. I'm tellin ya.. everyone should do it.

I'm anxiously awaiting robs pictures from last night's dance party. They were really fun from what I remember. rob's a good photographer even when he's completely wasted. I think.

I've got a crapload of work to do for design, and I'm not even sure they expect us to finish it all. I've got all day today to work on it thought. I think I'm going to make one some food to eat then head out to the library.
Peace.
