WEATHER PRECAUTIONS

Dress in layers ... as you walk you will warm up and may need to shed a layer! For footwear, wear insulated type boots, pack boots or even a good hiking boot with wool socks. This event will only be cancelled in case of extreme weather conditions such as a blizzard or below zero temperatures. If the weather is questionable you may check the NSTT Web site at newsflash.NSTT.org for last minute event info, or call 612-529-0552 after 8 p.m. the prior evening for a recorded message. In the event of no snow, the route will be walked.

Don't have your own showshoes??

North Mississippi Regional Park will provide snowshoes for a fee of $2.

Note: Depending on the number of participants, you may have to wait for someone to turn in snowshoes before you can go out. So come prepared to spend the day enjoying a Minnesota winter activity. If Mother Nature doesn't cooperate with enough snow, we'll hoof it in our walking boots. The event will be held in any weather except extreme wind chill or blizzard conditions. Check www.nstt.org for last minute updates.

North Mississippi Regional Park is a joint effort of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and the Three Rivers Park District and lies within the larger Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. The park, located near the northern border of Minneapolis, borders the western shore of the Mississippi River. Connected to the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway through biking trails, it ties the Anoka County Park system to the parkways of Minneapolis.

Great Blue Heron nest in the island trees along the banks. Its combination of offering an intimate enclosed nature setting in the middle of a highly metropolitan area makes the park very attractive to a wide array of people. Various wild animals such as deer, foxes and badgers can be found along the banks and seen visibly in late fall.

Designed as a green building, the visitor center takes advantage of natural lighting, cabinets made from shells of sunflower seeds, wheat, and recycled woods and plastics. The building's shape and the many windows are placed such that the Center can take full advantage of the light from outside, lowering the use of electricity. Exhibits tell the story of the Mississippi River and the impact it had on the surrounding community. Interpretive programs are offered year round focusing on the Mississippi River.
