The word
Minneopa is derived from the Dakota language and is
interpreted to mean "water falling twice." As the
retreating glacier melted and drainage patterns emerged,
the valley of Minneopa Creek was formed. "Downcutting"
occurred until a more resistant layer of rock was
encountered and this layer forms the ledge from which the
twin waterfall drops.
Established in 1905,
this is Minnesota's third oldest state park. The twin
waterfalls plunge 40 feet into the valley below. It is
the largest waterfall (a double waterfall at that) in
southern Minnesota. Hike through forest, prairie and
savanna ecosystems. Camp on a glacial terrace overlooking
the Minnesota River. Visit the remains of Seppmann Mill,
an old wind powered grist mill used by early settlers to
grind their grains.
National Register
Listing&endash; October 1989. The park's historic
district includes these resources. In the Concentrated
Use Area: Kitchen & Concession, Latrine, Pump House,
Drinking Fountain, Steps and Retaining Walls.?In the
Service Yard: Custodian's Cabin, Garage/Office/ Tool
Room. Minneopa State Park is representative of a number
of early state parks that were developed adjacent to
small towns and cities. Because these parks generally
served only the local community, many were eventually
transferred from the state park system to city or county
agencies. Minneopa is one of the few remaining examples
of this particular type of park.
Minneopa State Park
WPA/Rustic Style historic resources are architecturally
significant as outstanding examples of Rustic Style
construction featuring sandstone. The Sanitation Building
is an unusually finely crafted example of
stone-and-timber construction.
