The folkssport philosophy simply recognizes that everyone
cannot and should not attempt to compete in timed events
in which competition and awards are based on order of finish.

On the other hand, everyone can and should
participate in some lifetime program of exercise--
and folkssport is meeting that need for millions worldwide.

Get your calendar and mark the coming events that you don't want to miss! Then, on the day of the event, you will register at the park office or designated registration area. Each person will be give a Start Card that must be carried during the walk and left at the park upon completion of the event.

Water is available at the Start/Finish area and some check points, but walkers are always encourage to carry water with them as well.

Participants may register in advance or on the day of the event at the designated start point. Each participant receives a "start card," which is validated at designated control points on the trail. These control points usually have water and restrooms available. The event trail is usually marked with signs or colored tape/ribbon. In some cases, a trail map or description is provided. At the finish point, participants are eligible for distinctive medals or patches to commemorate the event, as well as IVV distance and/or events credits (which count toward IVV Achievement Awards). Then it's time to relax with food, refreshments and new/old friends to talk about folkssporting or other topics.

Participation is open to the public. If a participant chooses to receive IVV credit, the cost is usually $3.00. If the participants wants the commemorative award for the event as well as the IVV credit, the cost is normally $5 to $8 with the IVV credit at no additional charge. Registering for an event during the preregistration period usually reduces the cost for the award. There is usually a minimum charge of $2.00 per walker to help defray costs of putting on the event, trail signs, maps with directions, etc.
