      * semantically and grammatically both possible
    ** to be broken on the wheel was an old sacral death penalty. 
         The wheel was supposed to be the sun-wheel.
  *** used as a rope to hang the victims
**** shall:  not in the future sense, but in the sense of German "sollen".
