My '73 Charger, basically like I bought it. It was built with a 318 engine, A-998 automatic, bucket seats, console, A/C, power steering, power disc brakes, and a 2.73:1 8-1/4" open rear. Top speed: 110 MPH. Fuel economy: 21 MPG @ 60 MPH.

Here it is after I replaced the Appliance chrome wheels with rallye wheels that I had bought to put on the T/A. After purchasing them, I found out I had bought 15" x 6.5" wheels instead of 15" x 7".

Well, after 157,000 miles of my abuse, the orginal 318 needed a thrust bearing. So, to prevent damaging the transmission which had been changed to an A-727 by now, I spent a hundred bucks and my brother and I rebuilt another 318 with 360 2-barrel top components. In about 10,000 miles it had wiped a lobe off the camshaft. We put a 340 camshaft, intake, and carburetor on it. I got 19,000 miles out of that engine before it spun a rod bearing. I should have spent part of that $100 on a new oil pump! Needing a new engine, I decided it was time to install the '70 340 I had bought at an auction. We rebuilt it completely and correctly: 0.030 overbore, an old Direct Connection "purple shaft" that had been in the T/A, a three-angle valve job, and a lifter valley baffle. Doesn't it look gorgeous?

This was a nice engine. Maximum RPM: 6000. Plenty of power; guestimates put it at about 300 HP. After 5,000 miles I installed a set of adjustable rocker arms from a 273. This allowed the engine to rev to 6500 RPM now! Well worth it. With the stock rear end, top speed now is;
First gear: 70 MPH
Second gear: 130 MPH
Third gear: 120 MPH
It desperately needed a gear change! I bought an 8-3/4" open rear with 3.23:1 gears, but alas, the car was not destined to see the differential installed.

Here it as after making my last modifications. The 340 nicely installed and a power bulge hood from a salvage yard '73 340 Rallye Charger that even had factory hood pins with it.
