First let's get something straight; Pit Bull is not a true "breed" of dog. It's a term used by the uneducated, stupid legislators and the headline driven media to lump together any short coated, large headed, muscular dog that may or may not be an "American Pit Bull Terrier" as recognized by the United Kennel Club. While I personally do not own an American Pit Bull Terrier I know and covet many, many wonderful examples of the breed. The ones I have known are steadfast and sure companions, incredible athletes, willing workers and loving pets.

"So what? My dog's not a Pit Bull."
 
It's not just American Pit Bull Terriers that are being banned. Bans usually include any dog that anyone thinks resembles one or may be a mixed breed with an APBT parent.
Nationwide, at this time, over 28 breeds have been banned or restricted by local legislators. Those breeds include:

American Staffordshire Terrier
Staffordshire Bull Terrier    
Bull Terrier 
Akita
Alaskan Malamutes
American Bull Dog 
Belgian Malinois
Boerboels
Cane Corso
Chow Chow
Doberman Pincher

German Shepherd
Great Danes
Irish Wolf Hounds
Mastiffs
Malamutes

Once a town or state bans a single breed, the law is easily modified to add breeds. Once on a restricted list most insurance companies will refuse to write home owners policies.  So you see, it really is about more than just " Pit Bulls". Which will you choose? Your house or your dog?
