A true conservationalist is a man who knows that the world is not given to him
by his fathers, but borrowed from his children.
Audubon
We have a NEW COMMUNITY CENTER coming in Mitchell Ellington
Park!!!
THANKS to all the great NMI residents who wrote,
called and appeared there in person - it worked! The Commission had received so much positive response about it, they
passed it without needing to listen to our speakers.
It will take 18 months or so to build it and they may start
in 60 to 90 days. The county has built several of these, so they know exactly how to do it right. It will be hurricane
hardened to 170 mph winds and will also serve as a staging area for the County Emergency Management Team, as well as the Red
Cross, FEMA, etc.
There will be meeting rooms, a gym, an auditorium, and more!
This is just what our 7,735 residents of NMI need!!! And one of the best parts is that we can build it for ~ 40% less
than the last one cost due to the reduced economic situation...and there will be those JOBS!!!
THANKS AGAIN for making this happen!!!
FLOOD SURVEY & Letter
To electronically fill out and send in the SURVEY click here!
*AN OPPORTUNITY TO
OBTAIN FUNDING TO CORRECT OUR NMI FLOODING SITUATION IS HERE. The above FLOOD SURVEY needs
to be sent to the Natural Resources office ASAP!
Our County leaders are applying for a Federal Grant to provide the funding to correct the worst of our
flooding issues in NMI! If you had flooding in your area, fill out the survey and send it in! This
has come up very fast with a deadline of October 15th, so we are urged to act swiftly!
The FLOOD
SURVEY above is the link to the letter from the County Staff Engineer III, Robbyn Spratt to the NMI residents,
followed by a 4 page survey to be included with our county application for this Federal Grant. You may download it,

We know
pictures say a thousand words! They also need labeled pictures of the flooding situations
we endured during the last big event. Please call Ernie Brown, Director of Brevard County Natural Resources
at 636-2016, if you have pictures for directions on how to label and get them to his office as soon as possible.
This is
a huge opportunity that has come up very fast! Our input deadline is October 15th!!! It is up to us to act quickly
to take full advantage of this opportunity. Our NMI property values depend on those of the whole area.

NMI Stormwater Drainage Project
On March 24, 2009, the County Commissioners voted to approve the first stormwater drainage fixes
for the NMI area. The Lake George/Chase Hammock Improvements project will divert runnoff from approximently 630 acres
through two wet treatment ponds and increase culvert sizes at critical locations. This will reduce the stormwater pollutant
loading, help reduce flooding potential in the local area and improve water qualitiy in Sykes Creek and the Indian River Lagoon.
At our January 2009 meeting, District 2 Brevard County Commissioner Chuck Nelson; Director
of Public Works John Denninghoff; Engineering Manager Gil Rameriez; Road & Bridge Manager Scott Spillman;
Specialist Virginia Barker and other county staff attended our Association meeting to provide information and answer
resident questions regarding the TS Fay flooding issue. Natural Resources & Stormwater Management Director Ernie
Brown provided a power-point presentation regarding recent flooding issues on NMI. Approximently 115 residents attended the meeting and many questions were asked and
answered.
We are now aware that the NMI area is topographically a bowl, with all the inherent stormwater
drainage challenges that go with that realization. Staff described ideas to mediate this critical issue in
several areas. The current overall situation is now formally recognized and documented.
It is up to the NMI residents to be aware of the restrictions proposed development in this
area must face due to the potential issues this study brings to light. The resources to mediate this issue are critical
and the residents of NMI are encouraged to follow and support Commissioner Nelson in efforts to obtain such resources.
As property owners in the North Island area, we appreciate the great effort Commissioner
Nelson and county staff made to research and document this information, educate us and encourage communication between the
residents and staff regarding this issue. Now, it is up to the residents of NMI to make their voices heard.

North Courtenay Corridor Study
Recommended for Approval
On February 23, 2009, the Local Planning Agency (LPA) recommended approval of our long anticipated North Courtenay
(NMI) Corridor Study.
This advisory board recommended the county commissioners approve our North Courtenay (NMI) Corridor Study
and codify our study elements into county ordinances. This improvement to NMI is the result of many
NMI residents' hard work over several years (since 1992).
We
can have our corridor peppered with busy, garish, flashing neon signs close to the road or we can encourage a classy,
high value, well landscaped corridor with discreet lighting and generous setbacks, as the gateway to our home.
The latter will certainly increase our property values.
This
item will come before the Board of County Commissioners once more when it is ready to be finalized.
Please review the Corridor Study at: http://www.brevardcounty.us/zoning/documents/051012-npcrg2005final.pdf

North-North Tropical Trail Small Area Study Recommended
For Transmittal to State
The North-North Tropical Trail Small Area Study that was completed in 2005, approved by the BoCC
in 2007 and recommended by both LPA and the BoCC to be transmitted to the state as an Amendment to our Comprehensive Plan
and Future Land Use Map.
This study was a very thorough and high quality study that included area resident surveys, multiple
public meetings, county staff input and detailed research. One of the primary
conclusions of the study was that the zoning density in this area should NOT be increased, due to the overall limitations
in the area and that the rural quality of the area be preserved and the Indian River Lagoon be protected. Those higher zoning designations that were already in effect through prior BDPs in the area at the time
of the study remained.
