P. G. Wodehouse Quiz

Unfortunately, the literary agent for the Estate of P. G. Wodehouse has imposed limits on quotations from Wodehouse's works on web sites like this one. I cannot at present post a total of over 250 words from the works at one time, so the concept of a long-outstanding set of quiz questions, at least of the 'fill-in-the-blank' or 'identify this quote' format, is going to need some rethinking.

Until such time as a resolution can be worked out, I am suspending the Quiz.

Congratulations to Anne-Marie Chanet, who was the only respondent to tackle the difficult "Twenty" Questions quiz, and who got nearly all of the answers correct within a few days of posting. She is the undisputed winner of the Quiz so far.

I'm leaving the original objective of this set of Quizzes in gray type below, to show what I intended to achieve.

What quotations do remain here and elsewhere on my site are copyright by the Trustees of the Wodehouse Estate and appear by their permission.

There are no big cash prizes. There is no weekly time limit. I expect that the questions will remain open for additional answers for several months at a time, so that as many people as possible can collect points. There is no reward for being the first to answer. If all goes well (meaning that I have posted enough questions and received enough answers) I may announce the top results at the Wodehouse Society convention in Philadelphia in October 2001. If I get busy or lazy and don't have time to get this going as well as I plan, this may not happen. Cut-throat competitors and point-happy rule-quibblers are encouraged to enter other contests instead.

I do not expect that anyone will be able to answer a majority of these questions from memory, except perhaps in the "starter" quiz which serves as an introduction and system test. The ideal is for these queries to roll around in the back of your mind, so that as you read and re-read you'll say "Aha! THAT'S what was in the quiz!" and make a note to send in your response the next time you're online.

You may send in partial answers at any time. I'll try to automate the process so I'll always know what you've already answered. I don't want to require you to accept "cookies" in your browser, so I will need to have you enter your e-mail address each time; please be sure to enter it the same way so I can aggregate your scores properly. Please be sure to sign in with both your real name and your e-mail address on the Sign In page at least once so I can link the two; thereafter, you can bookmark this page and use that bookmark to check in on new quizzes or answer old ones.

Please don't ask for personal responses to check if your answers are correct; I'll give some occasional feedback on the progress of the quiz when I can find the time. Please, also, don't discuss the specific questions or give hints to others either online (on PGWnet or alt.fan.wodehouse) or in person. We want everyone to experience the thrill of recognition on their own! Do publicize the existence of the quiz as much as you like, of course.

These quizzes are, of course, based on my own reaction to what I find memorable in Wodehouse's work. The "universe" is broad, and will include both common and obscure works. Don't be frustrated if you run across something that seems impossible to answer; file it away in the back of your mind and keep reading!
