One of the most powerful seductions in interpersonal interactions is to be led off along the tangents of interest that are raised by the content of what the other person is talking about. Dealing at a content level is often indicative of basic therapy interventions.
NLP operates at the process level. The core question at the center of NLP is "How do you do that?" For classical interventions, whether in therapy, sales, managing or plain old communicating, we get taught what to do. This works great until it doesn't work anymore. NLP teaches us how to do things, to focus on how people do things. If we can back up to the beginning of a process, then we can gather the information needed to either learn to reproduce a process or affect the process to change the end result.
Dealing with content can turn us into advice givers, or an attempt at an intervention can turn into a war of conflicting opinions.
If we can remain focus on process long enough to completely gather information, we can build a solid foundation for an interaction or intervention.
Now, we don't want to ignore content completely - we merely want to prevent it from becoming a distraction to our information gathering processes. Some knowledge of content is necessary for empathy and connection.
