design books
Here are my recommendations for design related books. If you
can't get them at your local book store, I have linked them to
Amazon.com (for UK visitors I've linked some of the books to Amazon.co.uk.)
They are reliable and have a huge selection. In response to all
the requests I have listed a "how-to" car drawing
book. I still don't know of any "how-to" car design
books though.
How
to Draw Cars Like a Pro- gives a good introduction for drawing
and rendering cars. Nothing about design though.UK link
Industrial
Design: Reflection of a Century- A must have for all industrial
designers. A beautiful book offering a thorough (432 pages) history
of industrial design and its role in society. Very nice to look
at, but also a good read. The mother of all coffee table books.
Well worth your hard earned cash. (Last time I checked, it was no longer in stock...)UK link
The
Creative Priority- Finally a book written by a car designer.
Jerry Hirshberg, president and founder of Nissan Design International,
shows how creativity can become the fundamental organizing principle
of business. The book is not explicitly about car design, but
contains many examples and several images from NDI.
A
Century of Automotive Style: 100 Years of American Car Design
- A thorough coffee table book tracing the history of American
car design. Recommended by both Jack Telnack and Chuck Jordan.
Need I say more?
Oblagon:
Concepts of Syd Mead- Beautiful illustrations done by the
well known futurist/designer of Bladerunner fame. I don't even
consider myself a sci-fi fan, but had to get this book.
Portfolio
Design - The only book I've found about designing your portfolio.
It's geared towards architecture, but it's still quite useful
for industrial designers. (also out of stock...)UK link
Digital Dreams : The Work of the Sony Design Center
- A cool book I just bought myself. Excellent detail photographs and a very good description of the product development process at Sony. UK link
A Century of Design : Design Pioneers of the 20th Century
- by RCA design professor Penny Sparke. A very well written and illustrated book covering the greats of the 20th Century.UK link
Moving Objects
- published to accompany the exhibition of the same name that ran at the RCA in 1999. It is the most complete study ever published on the theory and practice of contemporary car design. Includes the work of many well known RCA graduates. Special order UK link only.
Marc Newson- I bought this book filled with digital images of his work. Very expensive, very nice, very rare. Get it if you can. UK link only.
