Ten Ways to Save Money at the Pump

Worried about the high cost of gas? You've got good reason. Gas prices look like they're set to reach record levels.

The best way to avoid spending more on gas than you need to? Keep all of these tips in mind:

1. Drive Smart! When you drive aggressively, you waste gas and put others at risk. Observe the speed limit, avoid rapid acceleration and braking, and maintain a constant speed on the road.

2. Keep Your Car in Shape. A well-tuned car burns less gasoline. So make sure that you get your oil and air filters changed regularly, and that your tires are always properly inflated.

3. Change Your Commute. Sitting in rush hour traffic burns gas and gets you nowhere. If possible, adjust your work schedule so that you avoid rush hour traffic. Even better, and if your employer allows it, think about telecommuting. If you can't telecommute full-time, try for one or two days a week.

4. Use Public Transportation. Look into the public-transportation options in your area, and use them as much as possible.

5. Try to Combine Errands. According to the Department of Energy, several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer, multipurpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.

6. Go for a Ride or Walk. Rather than drive your car to the corner store or a friend's house, walk or ride your bike there. Studies show that this approach has the added advantage of reducing your risk of heart disease.

7. Carpool. Carpool or use ride-share programs if you can. This might also enable you to shorten the time of your commute by using High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

8. Pack Light. According to the Department of Energy, a loaded roof rack on your car can decrease fuel economy by approximately five percent. Also, every 100 pounds you carry in a car reduces a typical car's fuel economy by one to two percent. So, when you go on vacation or a long car trip, put everything you can inside your vehicle, and pack light

9. Think Hybrid. The most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road today are hybrid-electric cars. A hybrid combines an electric motor with a conventional, but cleaner, gasoline-powered engine. Over its lifetime, a 50-mile per gallon hybrid Toyota Prius will use half as much gas, and release half as much global-warming pollution, as a 23-mpg Pontiac Grand Prix.

10. Consider Sharing. Rather than buy a new car, sign up for membership with a car-sharing program such as Flexcar or Zipcar. These programs allow you to reserve and drive cars by the hour -- and they cover the cost of the vehicle, insurance, gas, parking, and maintenance.

Bonus: Write Your Leaders. Urge them to raise fuel economy standards to 40 miles per gallon. Modern technology can make our cars and trucks go farther on a gallon of gas. Taking this step would save nearly 4 million barrels of oil a day -- more oil than we currently import from the Persian Gulf. And by saving on gas, you would save nearly $2,000 at the pump over the life of your car.

Somos Primos Magazine...

Dear Primos and Friends:

Sharing a July 4th message:
"This Independence Day, let’s pause for a moment and thank Spain, our forgotten ally and a steadfast friend during the Revolutionary War.  Spain was there from the beginning.  In September 1776, Spanish New Orleans sent 10,000 pounds of supplies:  muskets, cloth for uniforms, gunpowder, lead and medicine."
Lila Guzman, Ph.D. , author of the Lorenzo series.

The issue is jammed-packed with articles of readers caring and sharing.
New things happening, I will just share just a few:

At the request of a reader, I have started a new section, Books.  Please feel invited to send information on books, new and your favorite.

A new series by Felipe de Ortego y Gasca starts with this issue, La Leyenda Negra which you can locate under Anti-Spanish Legends. Plans for a symposium on this topic are underway.

In preparation for Hispanic Heritage Month, new resources have been developed: Dan Arellano has prepared a very moving 4-minute video on Hispanics in the Army.  Tony Santiago has shared two studies which can be downloaded, Hispanics in the Marines and Hispanics in the Navy.

For Indigenous researchers, John P. Schmal has created a PDF file prepared from data and materials gathered for presentations on Indigenous Mexico

Please share with family and co-workers, and have a great 4th of July celebration.

Warm regards, Mimi

FYI:  Important Information of a possible scam--Just be careful!

Don't be fooled, it looks legit and very real...
Very Important! They're already getting started.  I just received an
email, supposedly from the IRS.gov. claiming that I needed to click on a
link and fill out the necessary information to receive my 2008 Stimulus
Economic Refund.

Don't be fooled, it looks legit and very real.

I checked on the IRS.gov site, and they clearly advise against responding to
the email, and against opening the link, as it may place a virus onto your
computer. They note that they do not correspond with anyone via email, and
that it's a scam. If you should receive this email, please forward to:
phishing@irs.gov.

Interesting note from SNOPES.com If you are going to pass something along .  .  .  .  let it be THIS!

To whom it all concerns:
Just a word to the wise.  E-mail petitions are NOT acceptable to Congress or any other municipality.
To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address.

Same with 'prayer chains' -- be wary!  Almost all e-mails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards.  All it was, and all this type of e-mail is, is to get names and 'cookie' tracking info for telemarketers and spammers to validate active e-mail accounts for their own purposes.  Any time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to '10' of your friends, sign this petition, or you'll get good luck, or whatever, it has either an e-mail tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and e-mails of those folks you forward to, or the host sender is getting a copy.  Each time it gets forwarded, then it's able to get lists of 'active' e-mails to use in spam e-mails, or sell to others that do.

If you forward this notice to others you will be providing a good service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting 30,000 spam e-mails in the future.  (If you have been sending out the above kinds of email, now you know why you get so much spam!)

NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY

Did you get an email claiming that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls because of a new cell phone number database? Those claims are not true. In fact, federal law prohibits telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phones. You may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry, but there is generally no reason to do so. For more information, see the FTC's press release "The Truth about Cell Phones and the Do Not Call Registry".

Keep Your Children Safe From Lead Toys
After a child in Minnesota died as a result of eating a pendant containing lead on a pair of Reebok shoes last year, the Sierra Club petitioned both EPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission urging preventative action. The Commission and now the EPA have taken steps to ban lead in toy jewelry, but Mattel's second recall of lead-painted toys in as many weeks highlights how much work remains to be done.

The Sierra Club has taken the lead on keeping our children safe from toxic toys and is calling on the Commission to spell out ways to ensure quality control so we can prevent the production of lead children's toys instead of just recalling them.

New Sign of a Stroke: “Stick out Your Tongue.

STROKE: Remember The 1st Three Letters S.T.R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

You can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S * Ask the individual to SMILE.

T * Ask the person to TALK, to SPEAK A SIMPLE   SENTENCE(Coherently, i.e. It is sunny out today.”)

R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

NOTE: Another 'sign':  Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other--that is also an indication of a stroke.

If the person has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

THIS IS IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO SHARE WITH EVERYBODY
