Nina
Wemyss is a distinguished wine historian and lecturer.
She has created cultural programs on wine and civilization
and presented them to a wide variety of audiences throughout the
United States and internationally. Her
lively and informative lectures explore the fascinating origins of
wine, the rich relationship of wine and art in social history, the
story of wine vessels from pottery to glass in ancient and modern
cultures, the history of winegrowing in California, and Napa Valley
wine history. She
infuses each presentation with delightful historical and literary
anecdotes. |
Nina’s programs have been featured at the National Museum of American
History – Smithsonian Institution, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Art
Institute of Chicago, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Society of
Medical Friends of Wine, and Wine Press Club of Sydney.
She has given her illustrated presentations to executives in
industry and finance, private groups, non-profit organizations, special
interest audiences, and guests at wine and food festivals.
In 2003 Nina was the featured wine historian on the History Channel’s
“A Brief History of Wine.” She has served as a wine auctioneer for several highly successful
charity auctions. Nina has
created and edited two books: Soul
of the Vine: Wine in Literature and Robert Mondavi Oral Histories,
Volume I. In 2007 she co-founded Kylix Press and produced
letterpress Autobiography
of a Vine, a book in miniature.
Raised on the North Shore of Long Island, Nina holds a B.A. in
Literature from Manhattanville College and an M.A. in Education from
Boston University. After a
career in education, she studied art, history, wine, and cooking in Paris
for three years and completed the program in European decorative arts at
Sotheby’s in London, where she lived before moving to California.
In Napa Valley Nina spent seventeen years as Wine Historian,
Lecturer, and Cultural Ambassador for Robert Mondavi Winery.
She created, developed, and maintained the wine history programs,
library, wine antiques collection, and Robert Mondavi Winery archives.
Presently, Nina is the Wine Historian and Cultural Attaché at The Napa
Valley Reserve, H. William Harlan's private vineyard and wine
estate.
Nina’s abiding interest in wine has led her to the artisanal
production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc under
her Endeavour, Esperanza, and Entre Nous labels, respectively.
Proficient in calligraphy, nature and underwater photography,
Nina also enjoys riding, tennis, sailing, scuba diving, and fly fishing.
She continues to pursue her keen interest in history, the arts,
antiques, cuisine, and wine while traveling throughout the United States,
Europe, and Australia.
