Nina Wemyss Wine Historian

Nina Wemyss is a distinguished wine historian and lecturer.  She has created cultural programs on wine and civilization and presented them to a wide variety of audiences throughout the United States and internationally.  Her lively and informative lectures explore the fascinating origins of wine, the rich relationship of wine and art in social history, the story of wine vessels from pottery to glass in ancient and modern cultures, the history of winegrowing in California, and Napa Valley wine history.  She infuses each presentation with delightful historical and literary anecdotes.

Nina’s programs have been featured at the National Museum of American History – Smithsonian Institution, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Society of Medical Friends of Wine, and Wine Press Club of Sydney.  She has given her illustrated presentations to executives in industry and finance, private groups, non-profit organizations, special interest audiences, and guests at wine and food festivals.  In 2003 Nina was the featured wine historian on the History Channel’s “A Brief History of Wine.”  She has served as a wine auctioneer for several highly successful charity auctions.  Nina has created and edited two books: Soul of the Vine: Wine in Literature and Robert Mondavi Oral Histories, Volume I.  In 2007 she co-founded Kylix Press and produced letterpress Autobiography of a Vine, a book in miniature.

Raised on the North Shore of Long Island, Nina holds a B.A. in Literature from Manhattanville College and an M.A. in Education from Boston University.  After a career in education, she studied art, history, wine, and cooking in Paris for three years and completed the program in European decorative arts at Sotheby’s in London, where she lived before moving to California.  In Napa Valley Nina spent seventeen years as Wine Historian, Lecturer, and Cultural Ambassador for Robert Mondavi Winery.  She created, developed, and maintained the wine history programs, library, wine antiques collection, and Robert Mondavi Winery archives.  Presently, Nina is the Wine Historian and Cultural Attaché at The Napa Valley Reserve,  H. William Harlan's private vineyard and wine estate.

Nina’s abiding interest in wine has led her to the artisanal production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc under her Endeavour, Esperanza, and Entre Nous labels, respectively.  Proficient in calligraphy, nature and underwater photography, Nina also enjoys riding, tennis, sailing, scuba diving, and fly fishing.  She continues to pursue her keen interest in history, the arts, antiques, cuisine, and wine while traveling throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia.
