There is a plaque in front of the
National Archives in Washington, D.C. that reads, “What is past is
prologue.” Napa wine history is a great and
colorful story of those who loved a land, of immigrants from around the
world who created from their dreams and toil a bountiful way of life and
one of the greatest wine regions in the world. This
35 to 50 minute illustrated presentation begins with the Native
Americans who lived in Napa Valley for almost 4,000 years, encompasses the Spanish and Mexican periods, the pioneer days
and the young industry, the great wine boom and over-expansion, phylloxera,
Prohibition, and world war. Learn about the post-repeal era,
the renaissance in Napa Valley in the late 1960s and 1970s, the golden age
when wine became an art form in harmony with nature, and the continued
quest for excellence into the 21st century. The California wine industry contributes close to 90% of all the wine made in the United States. Remarkably, only 5% comes from the Napa Valley, but what great wine it is and what a fascinating history. |
