Every summer the Consortium for Latino Health in Philadelphia sponsors
science and math programs for Latino high school students. Developed with
the cooperation of Consortium members Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
and Allegheny University Hospitals, Hahnemann, both programs address the
severe under representation of Latinos in health careers and science-oriented
programs. Rising tenth grade students take courses in chemistry, geometry
and Latino literature at Allegheny University Hospitals, Hahnemann and
visit local academic and medical universities. Rising eleventh grade students
continue their summer experience at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
where they study physics, algebra, SAT preparation and Latino literature.
In addition to academic course work, these returning students volunteer
one day a week with various health professionals at Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital to learn about possible career choices. Students in both programs
participate in weekly seminars with healthcare professionals who discuss
their career experiences. The Consortium is currently preparing for the
1998 summer programs at both hospitals. If you have any questions regarding
the Consortium's-summer programs, please contact Alexa
