The First Mak ...

Window into Meade
Meade has evolved the Autostar and ETX line from their first, classic Maksutov - the ETX90. I wanted a little more aperture, so I got the ETX105/EC. This is a great, and portable planetary scope.

Telescope focal length f/14 Notes
1470mm Below, you will find my Field of View (FOV) calculations for the various eyepieces I use. Calculations are provided for the native f/14 focal length of my telescope. I recognize that (Maksutov-)Cassegrain optics' focal length is truly an effective focal length due to varying the separation of the primary and secondary mirrors. However, the tabulations below are more intended as a baseline comparison of the relative performance of the eyepieces, rather than a precise value to be used in some (unclear) way.

New Telescope:
I just got this Meade ETX105/EC. Between OPT and COSCO, I am pretty well equipped.
Mission:
This telescope is a great lunar and planetary scope. I can not see as much detail as in my 12" SCT, but I will be able to use it at times that I would not ordinarily consider setting up the 12". The two primary cases would be grab 'n go dusk/dawn Venus and Mercury apparitions, and during times of relatively poor seeing.
Note:
items (if any) in Gray are on order, or will soon be.

Also ...

I am definitely a Meade-Lover and you can read my LX200 tips page. Some of the tips for SCTs apply to MCTs as well.

A definite must-see is Mike Weasner's Mighty ETX site. A good mailing list for the ETX is ETXASTRO.
