Southern Extents

I hold Honorary Messier Certificate #404 for observing all 110 objects cataloged, completed in 1978.

I began logging observations of the Herschel 400 objects on 27 February 2000. My official announcement of this undertaking was made via e-mail to members of the Denver Astronomical Society on March 13, 2000, in honor of the two hundred nineteenth aniversary of Sir William Herschel's discovery of Georgium Sidus (Uranus). I logged the 400th object on May 19, 2002, and received certificate #246 of the Herschel Club on July 1st, 2002.

My OBSERVE: The Herschel Objects is ©1985 Lydel Guzman, Brenda Branchett, and Paul Jones; published by the Astronomical League.

This has been an excellent exercise in organization.

The discovery in the late 1970s that Omega Centauri was barely visible on my Southern horizon, and seeing firsthand the size of that Globular Cluster in my 8" Dynamax 8 SCT, left me with a desire for more southern observations.

This was not an immediate effect. It would be another ten years before I took my new 10" Meade 2120/LX5 SCT to the Tucson area. This time, I observed a number of southern objects, and used my 500mm Nikon mirror-lens telephoto to take the above photo. I hope to eventually replace the above with a better resolution photo.

Still another decade passed, and over Christmas and New Year's 2000/2001, I took my 12" Meade LX200 SCT South, again to the Tucson area. I was able to observe a number of Globulars that I had not been able to before. This set into motion the foundation for this list.

A short time later in March 2001, I again probed even further South. This time with a newly acquired equatorial wedge for my 12", I went to Big Bend National Park in western Texas. Gaining a full two-and-a-half degrees further South in latitude. This permitted Omega Centauri to really glisten. I was astonished at what a difference a couple of degrees latitude really made.

But observing closer to the equator can also have its disadvantages. My 12" Meade LX200 has a swingthru limit which does not permit the OTA to swing down between the forks. At N 29° 15' the farthest South I could reach was -45° in Declination. I had to remove the wedge to observe the Southern Extents in Altazimuth mode. This meant no photography.

One thing the Big Bend trip did for me though, was to cause me to get more organized. I skimmed through my Tirion Sky Atlas 2000.0 for deep sky objects between -30° and -65° Declination. Except for a few notables, I omitted galaxies and Emission nebulae entirely. I concentrated on Globular Clusters, Open Clusters, and Planetary Nebulae. I set a limit of -60° on the latter as they are more stellar in appearance and would not resolve as well closer to the horizon.

As it turned out, my horizon in Big Bend was at -60°.

The selectivity used for my list had the interesting side-effect of being a list of Southern Winter Milky Way objects and Southern Summer Milky Way objects. As I find suitable brighter objects from Millennium Sky Atlas or Uranometriae, I will add them to my list here.

For now, my list does not include objects further South. It would be nice to get to the Southern Hemisphere (or at least Hawaii) to probe further South. I once had a dream about observing the Magellanic Clouds. Since I did omit most Galaxies and Emission Nebulae, if you know of any my list should include, please let me know.
