Messier and Herschel with NGC numbers

I hold Honorary Messier Certificate #404 for observing all 110 objects cataloged, completed in 1978.

I began logging observations of the Herschel 400 objects on 27 February 2000. My official announcement of this undertaking was made via e-mail to members of the Denver Astronomical Society on March 13, 2000, in honor of the two hundred nineteenth aniversary of Sir William Herschel's discovery of Georgium Sidus (Uranus). I logged the 400th object on May 19, 2002, and received certificate #246 of the Herschel Club on July 1st, 2002.

I have completed the Herschel 400 list, and the Messier certificate had taught me well the lesson of taking notes. Finally I have created an entry for every object I have ever found, and taken note of on paper, as well as a few more I still want to find.

Parts I-VI, and Addendum A represent the first record I have of having observed an object. Addendum A has double entries for a few objects which I wanted to keep track of the occasion of having re-observed something special to me.

Addendum G represents the latest of detailed observations I made of Globular Clusters, a category of object that I have always loved to observe, but also one which became special to me in 2001. Completing the Messiers in 1978, hence completing the Messier Globulars in 1978, I knew of other New General Catalog GCs (5139, 2419 the most notable) and had even observed a few but not until I started working on the Herschel 400 Globulars, did it dawn on me that there were many more to observe, and even beyond the 34 of the Herschel 400 list. My Globular count includes, and therefore overlaps, the 29 Messier, and 34 Herschel 400 GCs.

In an effort to increase my telescope's reach, I have thrice traveled South with it, to observe those objects not easily seen (if not impossible) from my home latitude. The higher up Omega Centauri gets, the better it looks. The third and last trip South found me getting organized, creating a list of objects from  –30° to approximately  –65° South Declination, which you will find in Addendum S.

I have an ongoing personal program of Low Surface Brightness and other nearby galaxies and groups both in and around the Local Group.

I am pursuing observations of Open Clusters North of Addendum S as well.

In the Shallow Sky realm, I have completed my Sunspotter's observations, and will probably remain an active solar observer. Drawing sunspots is a fun diversion to the hectic daily schedule I maintain.

I have received the Regular Asteroid club certficate #12 for 25 observations and am more than a third of the way toward the Gold Asteroid (100) certificate.
