  1. Newtown Square was originally part of Chester County. Delaware County split from Chester County in 1789.
  2. West Chester Pike was formerly called "West Chester Turnpike ", a toll-road constructed of wood-blanks and stones. The basic toll was one cent per horse per mile.
  3. Trolleys used to run alongside West Chester Pike when it was a two lane highway. The last run to West Chester was on June 4, 1954.
  4. Stretton, England is the official sister-town of the township. Stretton, which is in the Cheshire area of England, was the birthplace of one of the earliest and most important settlers, Daniel Williamson. A proclamation to this effect was issued by the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors in November, 1979.
  5. "Number Please!", was the standard phrase heard when one would lift the telephone receiver in Newtown Square prior to February 1954. At that time, Newtown's dial system became effective and all numbers started with Elgin-6 or "EL6", now referred to only as "356". John I. Cable, as township leader, received the first dial-system call in his Dunwoody Farm office.
