Here are some facts about a few diseases which could potentially be used for Bioterrorism.  Please follow the links to the CDC website for more information about some of the threats.

Smallpox
 
Even though Smallpox was irradicated in 1977, the threat of its use for Bioterrorism is still real.  Smallpox is a disease which starts off with a rash and high fever.  The disease is very contagious.  We have a plan in place to vaccinate you in the event of an outbreak.

Plague
 
The plague is a very serious disease which causes respiratory failure.  It is can be treated with antibiotics if it is caught in time.  The symptoms are fever, weakness, and a rapidly progressing pneumonia.  People can also experience shortness of breath, chest pain, and a terrible cough.  Please read more information on the Plague available from the CDC by clicking below.

Anthrax

There are three main types of Anthrax; Skin, Lungs, and Digestive.  The one that we most worry about is the one that effects the lungs.  The nearest exposure was the exposure of a 90 year old female in Oxford, CT in 2001.  This disease is treated with antibiotics.  The main threat is the threat of it being sent in the mail.  Please follow the link for more detailed information.
