12 mo. (7 ins.) Green cloth boards with an ornate gilt design and border on the front cover. The spine lettering and detail is also gilded. This is a first American edition, published by Charles Scribners Sons, New York, in 1896. The copyright page and the title page both list the date 1896; the title page has the publisher's seal. There is no mention of subsequent printings. The top edge of the pages are gilded. There is an inscription on the first free endpage that reads: "(name) June 25th, 1896. to E. H. Starting on a cruise aboard the 'Constellation' bound for Nova Scotia." There are 266 pages, including the editor's note and glossary; plus there are 4 pages of ads for other books by the author.
Condition: Very Good Minus. The gilt on the cover and spine is bright. The binding is mostly tight but cocked. There is some bumping and rubbing. The top-edge gilt is chipped and faded. The spine and page-edges are darkened. There is an owner's inscription on the ffep. A few pages have minor smudges and foxing, otherwise the interior is near fine.
This is the author's last book. It was in progress when Stevenson expired; the final pages were written that day. The editor's note after the text attempts to outline the conclusion of the story as Stevenson would have it written.
