Edited by R. F. Leslie
First Thus Edition, Signed by the Author
12 mo. (7-1/2 ins.) Green cloth boards with a supple checkered design on the front cover. The spine lettering is gilded. The dustjacket is lime-green with black lettering and border. This is a first thus (first in this form) edition. Published by Manchester University Press, Manchester England, in 1966. The copyright page makes no mention of a subsequent printing. The author has inscribed the front endpage: "With best wishes, Roy (or Ray) F. Leslie." Part of the series "Old and Middle English Texts", G. L. Brook, General Editor. Printed in Great Britain. There is a review of this book and a price of "12s 6d net" on the front flap. The rear flap and the rear of the dj have a full list of books in the series. The dust jacket is now in a Brodart protector. There is a preface, a list of abbreviations, a five-part introduction, a select bibliography, a note on the text, the text, (the poem itself is only 4 pages!) notes, and a glossary. There are 99 pages, plus 9 pages of front matter.
From the dust wrapper: "The Wanderer has long been regarded as one of the finest poems of the Anglo-Saxon period, although there has been no general agreement on its theme or structure. The last twenty years, in a century of critical writing, have been notable for studies which have revolutionized attitudes towards both the text of the poem and the intellectual and cultural background of the poet. It seems an appropriate time, therefore, to publish the first separate edition of this favorite anthology piece."
Condition: Near Fine/Very Good Plus dust jacket. The binding is very square and tight. There is only a little bumping, and almost no rubbing. The cover texture is crisp. The spine lettering is strong, though the cloth is slightly faded. The top-edge of the cover is very lightly tinted. The interior is fine; the hinges are strong, and there are no notes or writing. The dust jacket has a faded spine and a spot; otherwise it is very good. There is minimal edge wear.
Also from the dustjacket: "This poem has aroused controversy particularly in respect of its explicit Christian references. It has been described both as a survival of a pre-Christian poetic tradition, defaced by monkish interpolations, and as a Christian allegory impregnated with the traditional themes of Latin Christianity."
