Rogers Price: $90.00 Books by Netsifters
and His Contemporaries
By P. W. Clayden
In Two Volumes
8vo. (8-1/4 ins.) Dark green cloth boards with a black, textured border. The spine lettering and detail is gilded. This is a first edition. Published by Smith, Elder and Company, London, in 1889. The title page and the preface both have the date 1889; there is no mention of a subsequent printing. The outside-edge of the pages are rough-cut, as issued. Ex-lending library with the usual marks: bookplate, date due slip, spine label and envelope at rear. The last date this book was checked out, however, was in 1928. There are 456 pages in volume one, plus 18 pages of front matter. Volume two has 466 pages, including the index; plus 6 pages of advertisements.
Condition: Very Good Minus. The bindings are mostly tight; a couple interior hinges are starting. Both volumes are cocked. There is some bumping and rubbing. The covers have some minor scratches, but the cover design is crisp and the spine lettering is strong. The edges of the pages are lightly tinted. Other than noted, the interior is near fine. Except for the previous owner's inscription (a classics professor) on the first free endpages, and minor signs of use, the pages are clean.
This first edition of an important work is scarce. It is the continuation and ending to The Early Life of Samuel Rogers, a separate, previous work by the same author. The events described take place in the title subject's fortieth year. Rogers was "a popular poet, a patron of literature and art, and a man of taste." He was a contemporary of Tennyson, Cowper and Thackery.
