Lives

By Plutarch

Translated from the Original Greek

with Notes, Critical and Historical; and a Life of Plutarch by John and William Langhorne

Complete in Six Volumes - from 1823

8vo (8-1/2 ins.) Three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Five-ribbed spine with title printed in gilt on black background. There is a previous owner's signature (a classics professor) on the first free endpage. Pages: volume 1 - 403 pages (i-xxxi front matter); volume 2 - 426 pages; volume 3 - 396 pages; volume 4 - 422 pages; volume 5 - 394 pages; volume 6 - 402 pages (includes Chronological Table, Account of Weights, Measures & Denominations of Money as Mentioned by Plutarch, and Index). Printed in 1823, the title page states, łNew Edition, Carefully Corrected Throughout". Volume 3 has a little sticker stating, "Bound by Hemington, Ingram Court, Fenchurch St." Published by W. Robinson & Sons, et al, London. Printed by Richards and Company.

Condition: Very Good Plus. All volumes are tight and square with little bumping or rubbing. The hinges are strong. The spines are somewhat darkened. The spine of volume 3 has a very small tear. Ink has shadowed the area around the printed text throughout. The pastedowns have darkened because of the adhesive used in binding. Silk ribbon bookmarks are present in four of the six volumes. A few minor blemishes are scattered throughout the set, such as small tears or lightly creased corners. Overall the interiors are very good. The frontispiece in volume 1 has had a strip cut from the top edge, most likely to remove a previous owner's name.

This handsome old edition was printed in English. Plutarch's Lives is a cornerstone set for any classics library. It has been read and quoted by some of the most influential people in history, such as William Shakespeare and John F. Kennedy.
