8 vo. (9-3/4 inches) Three-quarter leather / marbled paper boards, with gild lettering and detail on the spine. Published by J. & J. Harper, New York, in 1830 and 1831. This is the first American edition. The title pages have the dates 1830 and 1831; there is no indication of a subsequent printing. This is Harper's stereotype edition, complete in two volumes. The endpages are marbled. The top edge of the pages are gilded; the other sides are rough-cut, as issued. Volume one has 480 pages, volume two has 565 pages including the appendix.
Condition: Very Good. The bindings are mostly solid; volume two has a cracked front hinge, a couple other hinges are starting. The covers are clean and fairly bright, with some edge-wear. The leather is worn and torn in a couple areas. (see photographs) There is bumping, and moderate rubbing. The top-edge gilt is chipped and faded. The page-edges are slightly darkened and lightly bruised. The interior is very good plus, with moderate scattered foxing; heavier in limited areas. There are light smudges on a couple pages. Each volume has an ex-libris sticker on the front paste-down. A couple pages have had their top corners removed. Volume two has a previous owner's signature on the second free endpage.
