Flower Arrangements of the Ohara School

Volume One

Arranged and Explained by Houn Ohara

Translated by Hanano Kodera
Printed by Tsuchiyama Bunryudo
With Handbook!

8 vo. (8-1/4 ins.) Blue-green cloth boards with a tan cloth title label with black letters. The slipcase/box is brown with black lettering; it has a flap covering the spine. There are 24 wonderful full page, full color illustrations. This is a stated second edition. Published by Mitsuhana and Company, Kyoto, Japan, in 1952. The binding is "accordion" style. The endpages are white with gilded speckles. The pages are made from high-quality, heavy yellow paper. Each illustration has a facing page with an explanation of the arrangement. There are a couple slipped-in protective leaves. There are 50 unpaginated pages.

Also included is an handbook titled "Handbook for the Ohara School Flower Arrangements." It is 7-1/8 inches tall and is dated 1952. The author, translator and printer are the same. The title page has an errata slip. There are 10 pages. The condition is good plus: the pages are rippled, apparently from water damage.

Condition: Very Good Plus/Good Slipcase. The binding is square and tight. There is almost no sign of bumping or rubbing. The title label is crisp. The top-edge of the cover is very lightly faded. The interior is near fine; several pages at the back have corner creases. The front endpage has foxing, otherwise the pages are clean. A couple pages/illustrations have minor blemishes. The colors are very bright. The slipcase is modestly bumped and rubbed and has a small tear. There is a damp stain on the top, the front, and down the spine; but this has not effected the book. (The book must have not been in the box when the unfortunate accident happened. There is absolutely no water damage to the book.)

This charming work, produced by the world-renowned Ohara School, is rather scarce. The illustrations are a marvel. The symbolism behind the color and shape of the flowers, and the choice of vessel for each arrangement are examined. The scope and artistry are breath-taking. Whether you enjoy flower arranging, Japanese art or simply a beautifully produced book, this volume will amaze.
