Diary and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys, Secretary to the Admiralty
Complete in Four Volumes, with Map
By Samuel Pepys
Edited by Lord Richard Braybrooke
12 mo. (7-1/2 ins.) Richly embossed, blue cloth boards with gold lettering & embossed detail on the spines. Published by H. G. Bohn, Covent Garden, England in 1858. Printed in England. This set is part of Bohns Historical Library. Stated sixth edition. There are numerous finely engraved, full-page, black and white portraits. The frontispieces have protective leaves. Each volume has well over 400 pages, plus several pages of advertisements. Volume four has a rare, black and white, fold-out map (14-1/2 by 10-1/4 inches) titled "A Scheme of the Posture of the Dutch Fleet and Action at Shire-Nefoe and Chatham 10th, 11th, and 12th of June, 1667." The page-edges are rough-cut; many pages at the rear of volume four are uncut, as issued. Volume four has a comprehensive index. This diary is the frank, honest account of the life of a seventeenth-century gentlemen. The map was supposedly created by an eyewitness to the destruction of the English fleet (while at anchor in the Medway) by the Dutch.
Condition: Very Good Minus, on average. Bindings are good, but slightly cocked and a bit shaken. Hinges are starting; one page (an illustration) in vol. 2 is detached. Moderate to heavy bumping and rubbing; spines have some chips. Covers are mostly bright & clean, but worn. Cloth is breaking at the spine hinges of vol. 1 and rear hinge of vol. 2; the others are good. Cover detail and spine lettering is fairly strong, on average. Edges of the pages are darkened. Interiors are very good; there is light to moderate foxing. Protective leaves tinted, light creases, and small tears. Map is very good; there is a small tear on an inside crease, and modest foxing.
