Large 12 mo. (7-3/4 ins.) Ornate, green cloth boards with a gilded cover illustration and gilded lettering and illustration on the spine. Published by Chatto and Windus, Piccadilly, England, in 1898 as a reprint. (The title page has the date 1876, but the ads are dated 1898.) Printed in London, England. The frontispiece is full-color, with a protective leaf. There are twelve full-page, black and white illustrations, and a great many smaller drawings. There are 639 pages; plus, there are 32 pages of ads and 15 pages of front matter. The endpages are brown. The page-edges are rough-cut, as issued.
Condition: Near Fine. The binding is square, solid and tight. There is very little bumping or rubbing. The gilding is strikingly bright and crisp. The top-edge of the pages are slightly tinted. The previous owner (a classics professor) signed the second free endpage and the title page, otherwise the interior is near fine.
