Create a Digital Image Using a Scanner and a Found Object

Using your scanner and any object, like this lighter popular in 1950's Europe, and a recycled digital image (originally created by you, not a borrowed image), you can create interesting scanner art. Here's an image that was created that way...

How was the image created? First the lighter was scanned, lying on its side, at 300 dpi resolution, using a color photo setting. Then, the scanned image was saved as a TIFF Bitmap (TIF) image. The saved image was then imported into Corel Photo-Paint. The lighter in the TIF image was masked using Photo-Paint's mask brush tool. The mask was then used to create an object. To enhance the image, a perspective shadow was added to the object (the lighter) and the object rotated 90° clockwise.

The background of the image was erased (which removed the original lighter image) and a canvas effect was used to manipulate a previously created image (a woman in a flowing dress) into position. The object ( the lighter) was then merged into the background (flattened) and an oval vignette effect added. Photo-Paint's smear tool was then used to manipulate the image. Three colored lens flares were added to create a lighting effect. Then, parts of the image were darkened and sharpened.. Adjustments were made to the color hue and tone and the completed image was then saved as a JPEG (JPG).

Now that you've learned how easy it is to create scanner art using digital tools, it's time for you to start creating!
