    Looking to hear from any one serving or being transported on the USS Currituck, av7 1944-1946 Smooth sailing
    Bill AHNERT THE HILLBILLY

    Bill Ahnert was born in Amsterdam, New York, March 18, 1926, and enlisted in United States Navy August 28, 1943, at Albany, New York. Boot Training was at Sampsen, New York. Bill then went to Camp Allen, Norfolk, Virginia. 

    From there Bill was sent to Twenty-Nine Palms, California, then to Port  Hueneme, California.

    After Port Hueneme, he was sent to Currituck to the Pacific Marshall Islands, to Palawan Port of Princessa. Bill was in the Big Typhoon started in Okinawa and ended up in Formosa, China. He then transferred from Seaman 1st Class to Fireman 1st Class and was promoted to Water Tender Third Class, Oil King on the Currituck.  Bill was discharged in California on May 16, 1946.
