Young SugarPie Pumpkin

July 2002

Pumpkins were the long shot for the 2002 season. Since the space was available, I figured some pumpkin sprawl on the lower garden site would be fun. They started ok, then the weather got cold with whipping wind, and then a sudden heat spike. I didn't water correctly and the vines shriveled up while I was at work. We were left with 3 premature pumpkins that gradually turned bright orange.

Purple Allysum covered the lower garden floor and was stunning with the bright yellow sunflowers.

Sadly, no photo. It was a spectacular sight from our cottage windows.

New Photo for August 2003 is below. What a relief... the sunflowers are back!

The Pea sprouts never made it in the garden. I am guessing I transplanted too late and their growth was stunted.

I will plant seeds directly into the ground on Labor Day weekend for a winter crop.

After all,

the snap peas didn't do very well this year. I will try growing some by the strawberries for a winter crop.
The tomatoes are bountiful, even though they look dead. The plump red fruits are easier to find with all the foliage dying back.
