ROSE GARDEN FUNDRAISER: PREMIERE OF "ANTHEM"
Those of you enjoy taking your children for a walk through Berkeley's Rose Garden will have noticed that a new entry way is underway, but has stalled for lack of funds to complete it (by stuccoing the concrete wall and adding benches to enjoy the view). The Friends of the Berkeley Rose Garden are holding a fundraiser by screening the East Bay Premiere of the Movie "Anthem". You may have heard the two young women who made the film interviewed recently on KQED-FM. Here's what Box Office Magazine says about Anthem:
"The stunning documentary "Anthem" was shot entirely on videotape by two young women with a dream and a tank of gas...in a quest to chronicle what is and what has become of the "American Dream." ...Through interviews with dozens of people ranging in influence from waitress to White House aide, out has poured a complex study of the loss of pride and dignity in America, and the burning desire by people of all walks of life for authentic heroes and valiant political leadership...this is the rare kind of film that should be placed in a time capsule for future generations so they might have a better appreciation of our moment in history."
The benefit premiere is 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 28th, 1997 at the Shattuck Cinema. Tickets are $15 each. To guarantee a seat, please send a check made payable to BPFP/Friends of the Berkeley Rose Garden to P.O. Box 7664, Berkeley, CA 94707. If you send the check before Friday the 22nd, tickets will be mailed to you. Otherwise they will be held for you at the door. If they last, tickets may also be available at the door on August 28th. If you have questions, or want to be involved in the Rose Garden renovation plans, please call Christina or Jennifer at 486-2439 or Gail at 525-3005.

>Re: Flying with kids
From: ingrid
We have experience flying with infants and toddlers on international flights.
On international flights one can ask for a basket where a baby up till 6 months can sleep.
Most airlines which we have used, British Airways, Lufthansa, etc. will give you "bulkhead" rows (meaning the first row after a wall) and they have special hooks or tables to hang the basket. This is very convenient to feed/play/check/change the baby.
In our experience, United Airlines is the only airline which will NOT give you the bulkhead rows and the basket has to stand at your feet.

I, too, have had good luck with Southwest. Recently I've also flown on Western Pacific out of San Francisco, and they have been very accomodating about pre-boarding; on the route I fly, they've also been cheaper than Southwest. I'll be flying back to Berkeley with our two-year old in about a week, so if they've changed their pre-boarding routine, I'll let everyone know.

> Playing hooky at Stinson Beach
From: ---
Here is a fun day trip to do with older kids. One day last week I played hooky from work and took my two sons, 12 and 14, to Stinson Beach for the day. We all had a great time. I highly recommend doing this on a summer weekday: being at the beach instead of at work just adds to the pleasure!
Stinson is about 1.5 hours from Berkeley, via 80, 101, and 1. If you haven't visited, it is one of the most popular beaches around. It's a long, broad sandy beach with plenty of restrooms, changing rooms, and a snack bar. We avoided it when the kids were younger because it gets so crowded, and it is not as picturesque as some of the other beaches like Muir, Limentour and Pt. Reyes. However, to a kid, the fun ratio just goes up as the number of people increases on the beach. So my kids like Stinson best now.
We set out at 9:30am - we wanted to get an an early start but also avoid the morning rush hour. (We caught the deadly afternoon traffic on the way though, between 101 and the Richmond bridge). We brought a cooler with drinks and a bag of cookies but did not go to the trouble of packing a lunch - you can buy a hamburger or hotdog at the snack bar for under $4.
What to bring for the kids: dry clothes, a boogie board & a wetsuit. We have our own but you can rent them at Marin Surf Shop right on the way, as we did for a friend. The boogie board is $8 and wetsuit $10 for the day. That's all you really need for the kids. You can bring them a towel and a chair and books & toys and so on but they will be in the water all day except when they are woofing down hamburgers from the snack bar, andthey can sit directly on the sand for that!
What to bring for yourself: a chair, an umbrella, a good book, and some snacks. Just sit back and enjoy yourself - hours of uninterrupted reading in a lovely setting is yours except for the occasional "MOM!!! DID YOU SEE THAT WAVE I JUST CAUGHT??!!!" but the waves crashing on the shore are loud so you can pretend you didn't hear them. Every once in a while, just look up from your book and smile and give them the thumbs up. Another feature: the ongoing sibling feud disappears at the beach - as soon as their feet hit the sand they love each other and have a great time together. Hmm...
Don't forget to bring sunscreen - even on a foggy day (which we had) they can get burned. The wetsuit will keep them warm though and they will have a great time no matter what the weather is like. Also, as usual around here, come prepared for any kind of weather - a hooded sweatshirt over a T-shirt and shorts over a swimsuit is about right for this time of year.
