Packing lunch for small children
Packing Tips
Reusable ice packs are handy for cooling food, or you can freeze juice/milk
boxes if your child can handle them without squirting everyone.
Playtex makes a good non-spill sippy cup as well as a covered cup with
built in straw.
Lunch boxes with hard sides are more easily cleaned than soft-sided
lunch boxes. The latter will soon smell like stale milk.
Main Courses
- Mini-bagels with cream cheese and/or avocado
- Pita pockets (full size or mini-size!) stuffed with:
- Lean meat, sliced cheese, sprouts
- Tuna salad
- Cream cheese, goat cheese, cheddar cheese...
- Avocado
- Frozen mini-bagel pizzas (slightly overdone to add crispness)
- Flour tortillas spread with cream cheese and rolled up
- Cheese and apple slices on cinnamon raisin bread
- Corn bread with honey
- Cottage cheese and banana on whole wheat
- Tortilla wrapped around cheese sticks
- Cream cheese on pumpkin bread
- Sandwiches cut into squares or other shapes with cookie cutters
- Nancy's mini quiches
- Toast with hummous spread
- Rice crackers with cream cheese or peanut butter
- Thermos of soup or ramen
Assorted Munchies
- Cheese cubes, string cheese
- Mini bran muffin
- Small fruited yogurt
- Hard boiled egg
- Bologna from Magnani's (no nitrites)
- Cheese balls rolled in walnuts
- Polenta cubes
- Peanut butter as dip for carrot sticks
Fruit and Veggies
- Strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe pieces, small apples, sliced kiwi,
orange sections
- Small container of applesauce
- Box of raisins
- Dried cranberries or cherries (Trader Joe's has best prices)
- Baby bananas (Monterey Market has quite a selection)
- Baby grapes (fresh currants or "champagne" grapes)
- Mandarin orange segments (from can)
- Baby carrots, green or red pepper strips, jicama, or broccoli with
ranch dressing dip
- Cucumber coins or cubes
- Small corn on the cob
- Nori seaweed
- Celery sticks stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter (if you put
currants or raisins on top it's called "ants on a log")
