RABBIT EMERGENCY IN NEW MEXICO

This past month, HRS New Mexico discovered a serious crisis brewing right under our noses. An independent rabbit rescuer had rescued a large group of rabbits, but did not have the resources to properly care for them. HRS had been helping with spay/neuters and placing individual rabbits into our adoption network. However, we did not realize how severe the situation was until it had spiraled out of control and Animal Control was called in. Our volunteers visited the home for two straight weekends, and spent two Saturdays catching rabbits, sexing them, separating them, and creating temporary housing for them. Since then, the volunteers have been back twice a week to help feed and clean the rabbits.

We have so far captured approximately 334 rabbits, including adults, juveniles, babies, and newborns.

We've sexed and separated all of the rabbits, and they are living in safe conditions for now. We are in a time crunch because Animal Control wants the rabbits out, and because many of the females are pregnant. There are still a handful of rabbits to be caught. We are trying to get local veterinarians to help us with spays, but we need homes and housing and supplies and other help. Our volunteers have donated all of our own carriers, cages, and ex-pens
.

Our expenses so far for this rescue have topped $3000.  You can donate to help our rescuers care for the pet rabbits captured by writing a check to the House Rabbit Society Headquarters and in the memo section of the check write "FOR NEW MEXICO OPERATIONS".  You can also donate to us via Network for Good - please go to http://www.rabbit.org/newmexico for the link.

Below is a photo of the rescue operation begun in late May, 2009 .

apollo.jpg
Apollo

Apollo is a fun loving boy who is hoping to have a chance to be the great house bunny he knows he can be! He is currently available for immediate adoption at the Petco Westside store on Old Airport Road and hopes you can give him a chance to have his very own home and maybe even a girl to share it with! He is still working on his litter box skills, but is making good progress!

nicholas.jpg
Nicholas

Nicholas has to be the softest bunny in the West! Your fingers get lost in his fur as you pet him. Nicky (as his foster Mom calls him) is working to overcome a bit of shyness. She reports he is like a sponge soaking up all the attention he is getting from her. He is sure a winner in the cute department! Wouldn't you like to snuggle with Nicholas?  Please contact us for more information on this adorable bunny.

patchthebunny.jpg
Patch

Patches is very sweet and the girl that grooms for Petco mentioned that Patch
enjoys watching them groom the dogs through the window. She is very
curious and a nice bunny for a first time bunny parent. Patches is available for immediate adoption at the Petco Westside on Old Airport Road.

rosieandlily.jpg
Rosie and Lily

Rosie and Lily were found in a dumpster in Las Cruces. They were brought to the shelter and we were able to rescue them from there. They have been through a lot together and have found a great temporary home in foster care! They will need to be adopted together and are looking for a home that they can call their own forever! Bonded bunnies must never be separated. Check our link for more information about the joy of living with a bonded pair! If you have never experienced it, you don’t know love: http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-8/rabbits-in-the-plural.html .

boo.jpg
Boo

Boo is a little shy but with a loving home would become more confident. He is such a cutie! Wouldn't you love to cuddle up with him? Please contact Bill Velasquez at 292-6030 or bill@rabbit.org for more information on this bunny in foster care.

dudley.jpg
Dudley

Dudley barely escaped. He was in line to be euthanized because of his malocclusion. Sometimes a bunny has teeth that don’t fit together perfectly. The upside is that he can’t chew baseboards, cords, furniture, etc.! The only down side is that he will need to get his teeth trimmed periodically. No worry, just bring him to one of our periodic adoption events and one of our friendly volunteers will help!! Dudley is in foster care currently - contact Bill Velasquez at bill@rabbit.org for more information.

jodyandlolly.jpg
Gracie and the Bear

Gracie and the Bear are a playful loving couple that enjoy lounging around the house and snuggling with each other. They are calm and relaxed lop and half lop bunnies who recently lost their home. They would love to find a place where they can feel safe and know that thy will be loved forever. This is a male female bonded pair and they must be adopted together. They are currently in foster care.  Contact Bill at 292-6030 or bill@rabbit.org for more information about how these two can warm your heart and your home.

mollyandmuffin.jpg
Molly and Muffin

Molly and Muffin are lucky girls. Our Santa Fe volunteer saw their potential and has taken them under her wing to work with them and encourage them to become the wonderful house bunny pair that we all know they can be. They have made huge improvements in their social skills and are eagerly waiting for a loving family to adopt them and continue to mentor them as they blossom.  Because this pair is in Santa Fe, extra time is needed to bring them to Albuquerque for introductions. This can usually only happen on weekends.   Please contact Bill at 292-6030 or bill@rabbit.org for more information about how these two can warm your heart and your home.

elmerelsie2.jpg
Bonded Pair Elmer & Elsie

Elmer and Elsie arrived at the ABQ shelter together but lost each other once there. They ended up in separate cages and were all set to be adopted out as singles until one of our members figured out they were a bonded pair. These two love each other like only two bonded bunnies can and they must be adopted together.  Check our link for more information about the joy of living with a bonded pair:  http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-8/rabbits-in-the-plural.html  Elmer and Elsie are currently in foster care mending from their spay/neuter surgeries but will soon be at Petco.   Please contact Bill Velasquez at 292-6030 or bill@rabbit.org for more information.

Stanley

Stanley is a gorgeous black bunny with white mittens on each foot. His markings are very attractive and very unusual - he looks like a cat with large ears! Stanley's shelter number is A1560986 and he is litter box trained and neutered.
