Library Resources

The Sonoma County Wine Library, located in the Healdsburg Library, represents an unusual joint venture between the area wine industry and the public library. Supported by the area industry and administered by the Sonoma County Library, the wine library serves the industry by providing technical, scientific, business, economic and historical information concerning wine.

Book Reviews

Zinfandel: A Croatian-American Wine Story, by Jasenka Piljac, 2004, US$30.  "The aim of the book 'Zinfandel: A Croatian-American Wine Story' is to provide a picturesque and detailed portrayal of the search for original Zinfandel from an insider perspective."

Zinfandel: A History of a Grape and Its Wine, by Charles L. Sullivan, 2003, US$25.95.  "The story of how zinfandel came to the U.S. is worthy of a Russian novel: a long and confusing one, with missing records, lies told out of love and simple misunderstandings. Sullivan has been tracking the grape for about 30 years, and with this book he sets the record as straight as it's ever been."--Wine & Spirits Magazine

The Zinfandel Trail: A Guide to the Wine and the Wineries Which Produce It, by Ian Hutton, IGH Publications, US$27.  The author spent two years researching this book and travelled over 10,000 miles to interview all of the leading Zinfandel winemakers and growers.  He describes how the methods of cultivation and vinification, together with vineyard location, lead to the different styles of zinfandel wine.

Zinfandel: A Reference Guide to California Zinfandel, by Cathleen Francisco, Key Wine Publications, $17.  This reference guide covers 1997 ZIN releases from 90 wineries - concentrating primarily on the 1995 and 1996 vintages.  There are numerous facts about each wine covered, such as vineyard sources, percent alcohol, amount of residual sugar, the bottling date, specifics about aging, etc.  There are also winemakers' tasting notes.  I've seen the book at the Toyon Bookstore in Healdsburg and at the Quivira Winery.  It's also available at the Ravenswood Winery.

Zinfandel Cookbook: Food to Go With California's Heritage Wine, by Jan Nix and Margaret Smith. Palo Alto: Toyon Press, 1995. Dozens of recipes, from appetizers to desserts, developed specifically to combine with ZIN wines.

Old Vines, A History of Winegrowing in Amador County, by Eric J. Costa, Piedmont Publications, Pine Grove, CA., 86 pages, softcover, $14. "Zinfandel lovers will want this book for their libraries. It's an interesting account of one of California's smaller but high quality regions."

Angels' Visits: An Inquiry Into the Mystery of Zinfandel, by David Darlington. New York: Henry Holt, 1991. A history of growing ZIN grapes and making ZIN wine in California - with a focus on Sonoma County.
