Celebrity Jeopardy! (SNL)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Will Ferrell (as Alex Trebek) and Darrell Hammond (as Sean Connery).

Celebrity Jeopardy! is one of the most popular recurring sketches on Saturday Night Live that parodies the television game show Jeopardy! tournament of the same name, which is known to have easier-than-normal answers asked when celebrities compete. 13 sketches have been aired to date, numbering 2 a season from 1996-2002, and 1 in 2005.

Will Ferrell appears as host Alex Trebek in all 13 of the sketches. Darrell Hammond appears in all episodes as well, 11 of them as Sean Connery. Norm MacDonald appears in four episodes, all as Burt Reynolds. Also, Jimmy Fallon appeared in six episodes, and Dean Edwards in two, but never as the same character.

The sketches always begin during the second round of Jeopardy!, and two of the "contestants" have somehow attained very negative scores, while another "leads" with a score of zero or a ridiculously low positive score such as 8 or 14. However, Marlon Brando led with negative 4,500 and Chris Tucker led with negative 5,000. Trebek, being portrayed as the beleaguered straight man, attempts fruitlessly to manage the contestants, who are over-the-top caricatures of other celebrities. The question categories are usually (with a few exceptions) humorously simple, such as Foods ending in "amburger" or Months beginning with "Feb" or Colors ending in "urple" or even Movies that begin with the word "Jaws"; the category Potent Potables (which is more in line with a typical Jeopardy! category) is always featured but never selected by a contestant or Trebek. The contestants, particularly Sean Connery, blatantly misinterpret questions, misread topic titles (S-Words becomes Swords, for example, "The Pen is Mightier becomes "The Penis Mightier," and Therapists becomes The rapists), and in general display high levels of neuroticism and incompetence. Meanwhile, Trebek insults the contestants, is bombarded with sophomoric insults from Connery (often referring to alleged sexual acts with Trebek's mother), and eventually finishes by giving up on the scripted questions and delivers a childishly simple "Final Jeopardy!" question (e.g. "Things You Like," or "Horsies"), which of course is always botched by the contestants (excepting Connery, who occasionally answers correctly but whose wager transforms the answer into something rude; for example, when Trebek celebrated Connery's answer of "indoors" to the question "Where are you right now?" he resumed his usual state of disappointment when the wager revealed Connery's answer to actually read "I <3 BOOBS").

Initially, Burt Reynolds was to be the celebrity that appeared in each episode. Sean Connery was supposed to be one of the many celebrities that only appeared once. Upon Norm MacDonald's firing in 1998, writers decided to bring back Sean Connery, who appeared in every episode since, although Reynolds did return when MacDonald hosted in 1999.

The sketch was apparently retired on Will Ferrell's own retirement as a regular SNL cast member in 2002, but returned for one more appearance on May 14, 2005, when Ferrell hosted for the first time since leaving as a regular. The final regular sketch featured the real Alex Trebek in a cameo appearance, and the return featured the return of Trebek and Connery as characters, with the Final Jeopardy! question "Math questions a first-grader could solve".

Darrell Hammond

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Darrell Hammond.

Darrell Hammond.

Darrell Hammond (born October 8, 1955 in Melbourne, Florida), has been a cast member of Saturday Night Live (SNL) since 1995. Midway between the 2004–2005 season, Hammond set the record for the longest tenure of any SNL cast member in the show's history. Hammond also holds SNL records for most impressions by a single cast-member, and most times saying the legendary catch-phrase "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" to start the show.

Hammond graduated from Melbourne High School in Melbourne, Florida in 1974 and then attended the University of Florida at Gainesville where he majored in broadcasting. After completing college, Hammond moved to New York City where he lived for several years before joining the cast of SNL.

A gifted impressionist (thought by some to be the best in SNL's history), he became famous for his impressions of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ted Koppel, Bill O'Reilly, Regis Philbin, Chris Matthews, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, Dr. Phil, Jesse Jackson, Phil Donahue, Sean Connery, Donald Trump, Bob Costas, Richard Dreyfuss, Rudolph Giuliani, Al Gore, and George W. Bush for a brief period after Chris Parnell had a crack at it in the wake of Will Ferrell's departure from the cast. Although he does many impressions, he is best known for his segments impersonalizing Bill Clinton during his second term. When veteran announcer Don Pardo is unable, Hammond fills in to introduce the cast, with a spot-on Pardo impersonation.

Hammond returned to SNL for the 2005-2006 season, making it his eleventh season.

He married his wife, Elizabeth, in 1983 and then again in 1990 after a divorce in 1986. They now have a daughter named Mia who was born in 1998.

It's a shlep, even if you have arrived
New York Daily News Wed, 21 Dec 2005 1:24 AM PST
Maybe a public transit strike - not death - is the great leveler.

As New York City suffered through Day One without subways or buses, even the high and mighty - well, with the possible exception of Donald Trump - were not immune from the consequences.

As for the fabulously thatch-roofed real-estate impresario and reality-television star, "Donald is a unique person, because he lives in the building he works in, so he doesn't have a commute," a Trump spokeswoman revealed yesterday.

Here's Lowdown's spot check of how other prominent New Yorkers were coping with a potential transportation disaster:

  • Satirist Mo Rocca: "I thought it would draw New Yorkers together more than it has. I imagined hopping into a rickshaw with a Latina and an African-American. ... I have a personal trainer but I don't do enough cardio, so I ran up Madison Ave. to Paul Stuart."

  • MTV veejay Damien Fahey: "I busted out the Big Wheel and rode like the wind."

  • PR diva and MTV "PoweR Girls" star Lizzie Grubman: "My staff has all come to work, except Mr. [Jonathan] Cheban - I don't know where he's been. He's been MIA. I had to pick the staff up and chauffeur them in to work. That's what happens when they're on MTV: Power Divas."

  • "Saturday Night Live" comic Darrell Hammond: "I normally take the 1 and the 2 downtown to do standup, because it's much faster. Today I am doing the shared cabs, where they can stop and pick up four fares, but it's not easy to find one. I'm trying to get to the East Side, and it's a parking lot. I'm not mad at anyone. I think you'll find a more meaningful dialogue as talks continue. New York is a special place."

"I'm always nervous around presidents and vice presidents."

    The Reliable Source

By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts

    Thursday, December 15, 2005; Page C03

We have discovered something new about the vice president, and it may have the power to boost those approval ratings!

The man invited his most wicked impersonator to his own Christmas party.

"Saturday Night Live's" Darrell Hammond , who has perfected the crooked little smile of Vice President Cheney , was a jittery guest at Tuesday's bash for 400 at the Naval Observatory. Not to worry -- the comedian says he was "warmly received" and "shared a chuckle" with the veep and wife Lynne when he posed for the standard souvenir photo. We wish we had seen that, to tell you which man does the better Cheney. Hammond said he doesn't even remember their conversation: "I'm always nervous around presidents and vice presidents."

This was Hammond's first invite to the vice presidential residence, where he mingled with Alan Greenspan , Andy Card , Mary Cheney , Newt Gingrich and Wolf Blitzer . (No sighting of Karl Rove or Scooter Libby . ) The comic, who also does impressions of President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld , behaved like any other rubbernecker. "It's hard to not be star-struck," he said, when you're shaking hands with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Antonin Scalia .

At these events, it's best to have some party patter at the ready. Three press types found themselves making small talk with Roberts when Ed Chen of the Los Angeles Times asked how the "new gig is working out."

    "Great," said Roberts.

The Post's Mark Leibovich then asked the judge whether it's . . . well, appropriate to describe the job of chief justice of the United States as a "gig."

    "Oh yes," Roberts replied. "Absolutely."
