'SNL' star isn't himself, and that's paying off
By RODNEY HO Cox News Service Sunday,
August 22, 2004
ATLANTA — Darrell Hammond says he's become reconciled in the past year with the fact that his legacy will
be his impersonations — the Rich Little or Phil Hartman of this generation.
As "Saturday Night Live's" go-to guy when celebrity mimicry is needed, he's aped more than 120 people, from
Jesse Jackson and Donald Trump to former President Clinton and Vice President Dick Cheney.
Despite a sinus infection earlier this week that made his voice sound oddly gruff over the phone, he gamely
answered a few questions:
Q: You're entering 10 years with "Saturday Night Live," one of the longest tenures in its history. Why stay?
A: The best part about staying here is I get paid well and get treated well. I get to stay in New York City
and be with my family. A lot of people leave to become leading men or women. I'm not a leading man — or woman. I'm a character
actor, and I'm in no rush to leave here.
Q: I hear they often give you almost no time to prepare.
A: I do a lot of topical sketches, so they wait until Friday night before telling me who I'm going to play.
Friday into Saturday is like a prolonged thunderclap, a 24-hour siege I'm under. I do a lot of cold openings [the opening
sketches]. I did 15 last year. I understand people will change the channel if the cold opening doesn't go well.
Q: How did you work Donald Trump, for instance?
A: I spent Friday night watching tapes of him. . . I exaggerate his voice. I call it Trump vision.
He doesn't understand defeat. He converts anything strange and unkind into something successful.
Q: How about his facial expressions?
A: When he's emphasizing something, he'd turn his head to the left and narrow his eyes. First time I played
him, the whole monologue, I had my head turned. There was no time. I had to find a quick hook.
Q: Even though he's out of work, President Clinton keeps you employed, eh?
A: I've always got a job just doing him. He's larger than life. Everybody knows him. And he has this amazing
charisma I can't even define. I've probably done him more than 50 times on air now.
Q: Are some folks disappointed when they meet you and you're not a laugh riot every second?
A: In person, I'm pretty much a drip. People have told me that. I've met fans who say, 'Man, you're not funny
at all. You're so quiet and subdued.' "
Q: What would we expect if we elected Darrell Hammond as president?
A: Someone who would probably try to please everyone. As a result, I'd get nothing done.

Darrell Hammond to Host News Emmys
NEW YORK (AP) -- Saturday Night Live" cast member Darrell Hammond has been tapped to host the 25th
annual news and documentary Emmy Awards. Unlike "SNL," the ceremony won't be live from New York. Instead, it will be taped
at the Marriott Marquis Hotel on Sept. 13 and then telecast on Sept. 25 on the Discovery Times Channel.
"We are pleased to have Darrell Hammond join these prestigious news personalities at this year's celebration,"
Peter Price, president of the National Television Academy, said Tuesday. "Mr. Hammond brings the special credential of having
impersonated many of America's most prominent newsmakers and newscasters."
Peter Jennings, Diane Sawyer, Wolf Blitzer, Brian Williams and Dan Rather will present awards. Rather is among
many newsmen and political pundits Hammond has imitated during his eight-season run on NBC's "SNL." He's taken on almost everyone
in the Bush administration (Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, John Ashcroft, Colin Powell, Tom Ridge), and is well-known for his
portrayal of former President Bill Clinton.
"We're delighted that Darrell Hammond has agreed to host this year's ceremony," said Discovery Times General
Manager Vivian Schiller. "It's only fitting that he stand up in front of the very people he routinely skewers in his hilarious
and incisive comedy sketches."
The Academy's lifetime achievement award for news and documentary will be presented to Tom Brokaw, who's retiring
as the anchor of "NBC Nightly News" later this year.

SNL’s Darrell Hammond coming to OU Sept. 10
|
|
By Kalee Iacoangeli OU Student Writer
Saturday
Night Live’s political comedian and satirist, Darrell Hammond, will perform at OU on Friday, Sept. 10, as part of this year’s
Celebrating the Liberal Arts Presidential Leadership theme, sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.
In
the midst of an election year, the 2004 academic school year will feature many special events, including classes that explore
the importance of politics, guest speakers and presentations from authors, OU alumni and local politicians, a political film
series and trips to presidential locations.
Hammond’s
performance is one of the first major Presidential Leadership events planned for the year.
Hammond
is mostly known for his impressions of former president Bill Clinton, but impersonates many other politicians and media figures
as well. He has impersonated nearly the entire Bush administration from Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld, Attorney General John Ashcroft, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge. Rudy Giuliani,
Jesse Jackson, Dan Rather, Sean Connery, Jay Leno and Regis Philbin also are on his list of impersonations.
Hammond’s
talent and accuracy of portraying these luminaries has gained him national recognition and the opportunity to perform for
President Clinton in 1997 at a political event in Washington, D.C., and for President Bush at the White House Correspondents
Dinner in 2001.
His
political humor has not only developed his stand-up comedy career but also has led to guest appearances in movies such as
“Scary Movie 3,” “New York Minute,” “Agent Cody Banks” and “The King and I.” These roles, along with his television appearances
on several late-night talk shows, MTV, Showtime, Comedy Central, VH-1 and many more have made Hammond one of the most recognized
names in political comedy.
His
celebrity, along with his signature impressions, makes Hammond a unique addition to OU’s Presidential Leadership program.
The performance will showcase the more relaxed and comical side of politics.
“We
selected Darrell Hammond because of his ability to do political impersonations and also with the hope of kicking off the Presidential
Leadership theme on a little lighter note,” said Center for Student Activities Director Jean Ann Miller. “We want to keep
it balanced and keep it real. Life in America can be so serious and it’s just another way of showing how life can be in the
United States.”
Hammond’s
performance begins at 7 p.m. in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but on a first-come,
first-served basis.

Leadership theme, visit the Presidential Leadership Web site. | |
