THE CAR IS IN BRAZIL. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO IMPORT
IT?
|
Importing this car from Brazil to your country is not at all complex. I've done gone
through this process three times and will be more than happy to assist you. The following paragraphs summarize the tasks
to take the car out of Brazil.
First, hire a freightforwarder, a customs agent in Brazil, and perhaps a custom
agent in your country. (NOTE: I did not need to hire an agent in the US, nor did the fellow In Holland who purchased my first
SP2.)
The Brazilian customs agent will:
- take care of all paperwork in Brazil,
- see that the car is delivered to the freightforwarder, and
- send you copies of all paperwork.
(NOTE: I'll make sure to deliver all required papers to the agent and will follow the process
up for you.)
The freightforwarder will:
- transport the car to the port of destination,
- inform you date of arrival,
- deliver all required paperwork to you or to the customs agent of your choice in your
own country.
You or your customs agent will perform the steps required to clear the car through your country's
customs.
I've imported two cars from Brazil to the U.S. and the experience was so simple that
I did not need to hire a custom's agent in the U.S. I performed all the customs clearing steps myself. More on
my own experience below.

WILL YOU HELP ME THROUGH THIS PROCESS?
|
Absolutely. I'll work hard to make sure that the whole process
goes as smooth and trouble free as possible.
I will:
-
help you select a freightforwarder and a customs agent in Brazil
-
hand the required paperwork to the customs agent
-
answer any questions the agent may have
-
help your communications with both agent and freightforwarder
-
make sure the car is delivered to the freightforwarder
It is important to remember that although I'll be more
than happy to assist you, you'll be hiring both freightforwarder and customs agent and pay them directly.
I'll charge you no fees associated with the export/import
process.

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO IMPORT THE CAR TO THE US?
|
It is not at all difficult to import the SP2 into the U.S. because
it is more than 25 years old.
You'll need the Bill of Sale and the original Brazilian title (I'll provide
them both), the Bill of Ladding (issued by the freightforwarder), DOT form HS-7 (declare that the car is 25 or older on it), and EPA form 3520-1 (declare code "E" on it).
At your Port of Entry, a Customs Officer will:
- give you a DOT and an EPA form to fill up and sign.
- charge a 2.5% customs duty calculated based on the price on
the Bill of Sale.
- hand you the Bill of Ladding and all other forms with their
stamp of approval.
With those forms in hand, you will go to the warehouse where
the car is, hand the forms to the caretaker who will release it for you.
Next, with the same forms on hand you'll take the car to
the nearest DMV office for a title, license plate, and tag.
This entire process took me 45 minutes.
The information above describes my own experience
importing a 25 years old car into the U.S. It merely illustrates that the process can be quite simple.
But, it cannot be construed as legal advice. It behooves you to consult the DOT and EPA sites and your local DMV office.

HOW DO I TRANSFER THE CAR TO MY NAME?
|
Of course I cannot comment on your country's or state's regulations
to transfer the car to your own name. They may differ substantially from my own
experience in the state of Florida in the U.S.
Here is what happened during my own import process in the US. Note that this is a mere description of my own experience in Florida. By no means it can be construed as legal
advice. Your own or other people's experience can differ from mine.
I took all the paperwork already approved and stamped by
the Customs Officer: Bill of Sale, Brazilian title, Bill of Ladding, DOT form HS-7, and EPA form 3520-1 to
the Florida's DMV office near the Port of Jacksonville.
The DMV officer physically verified the car's VIN number against
the paperwork, charged me both a tag fee and 7% sales tax based on the Bill of Sale. Then, on the spot, the
DMV issued me a brand new Florida title, license plate and tag. The whole process took less than 30 minutes.
All very simple and straightforward.
If you are in the U.S., please consult your state's DMV for your
state's requirements.
If you are in a country other than the U.S, I'm sure there is a
government agency that will let you know their own requirements to transfer the title of the car to your own name.

EMISSIONS AND SAFETY TESTS
|
Every country has different requirements and regulations
as far as emissions tests and pollution controls go.
The SP2 is of a vintage that precedes pollution
control regulations in most countries. I have no idea if it is possible to retrofit the SP2 to comply with
modern pollution control regulations. Therefore, it is advisable to verify with your own government's agencies
whether cars made in 1975 or earlier are exempt from those regulations before
purchasing the car.
In the U.S., to the best of my knowledge, both DOT
and EPA do not require that vehicles 25 years or older adhere to all emissions and safety regulations.

The odometer works but the mileage (km) shown is not actual because
the odometer was renovated.
In the U.S., to the best of my knowledge,
most states exempt cars older than 25 years from mileage verification.

Sale is final. No returns or refunds allowed.
This is a vintage car, therefore it is sold "AS IS" with no warranties stated or implied.
I worked hard to describe the car to the best of my knowledge and as throughly as possible, but I am neither
a car dealer nor a mechanics professional therefore cannot be hold liable or responsible for any innacuracies in the
descriptions herein.
