My Hobbies

Like most people, I do have a few hobbies. Most are innocuous and people don't care what they are. But some people actually do care, so here is some information. This is after all, a bragging page.

Writing

I've done a reasonable amount of writing in my spare time. I've written novels, a couple short stories, as well as the mandatory teen-age angst poetry. In the non-fiction area, I've written technical documentation on subjects like cfengine and SSH, as well as other topics in the field of UNIX system administration.

Those expecting to find samples of my writing will need to ask me for a direct link. I no longer make my writing easily available.

Recently, I have been taking a course where I have been editing a fantasy novel I have been writing. Yes, I'm working through a workshop to do this.

Music

I used to play violin while I was still in school. Like most students, I gave it up when I left high school. Recently, I picked it back up and have been playing, trying to get my playing ability to a decent level. No, I am not good enough to even feel comfortable applying for the local orchestra, but I am having fun doing it.

Fundie baiting

Like many educated people, I am interested in science. For fun in the past, I have spent time playing with religious extremists, pointing out problems with what they claim, etc. There is a serious side to this hobby. Religious extremists have been attempting to cripple modern technical education throughout the country, reducing or eliminating basic information in fields from mathematics, physics, earth science, biology, etc. Examples include restrictions on teaching basic reproductive health, evolution, a dumbing down of modern mathematics. The list goes on. There are some good web sites I've found that use humor or serious discussion to deal with the topic.

Education

Because of my background, I am also very interested in the subjects of education, especially in technical fields like math and computer science. Sometimes slightly unusual math will attract my interest for a while. Some years back, I studied chaos theory and cryptology.
