Get Ready for Summer
Come to our June meeting and you’ll leave with a
gift that’s perfect for summer. Join us at our regular meeting June 9th at 7:00 p.m. to carve an Uncle Sam pin with Hershal Borders. Hershal’s projects are always fun, and he’s a great teacher, so be sure to take advantage of
this opportunity.
Don Ward did a great job leading the club in golf ball
carving last month. Each member received two sliced-open golf balls, one of which
had half a face already carved in as a go-by. This project was quick and fun,
and we’re expecting to see a bunch at show and tell in June.
Help Out the Pres
One of the jobs of the president is setting up the club
meeting activities. We already have some people signed up to lead courses through
the summer, but we still need volunteers to lead projects through the rest of the year.
Even if you’re unsure of your carving skills, don’t worry. You
won’t find a kinder or more appreciative audience, and this is a great way to learn.
They say you never know it until you teach it. Also, you can partner with
another carver, or grab a book from our library if you need ideas.
Our line up of projects this year includes:
July
Roger Kimmel, Christmas project
August
Lowell Dunn, TBD
Also, our club activities don’t necessarily need
to be carving projects. We’ve had speakers and demonstrations in the past. If you have an idea for someone who can give a lecture or demo, please let club president
Roger Kimmel know (837-255-8295, mvwa@earthlink.net). We also need a volunteer to organize our Christmas potluck dinner.
Anniversary Projects
At our May meeting, several club members volunteered to
take on projects to commemorate our club’s 25th anniversary. Buell
Burns, Park Rayfield, and Hershal Borders agreed to lead a friendship cane project.
Each club member will carve a block for the cane, which will be displayed at shows.
We’ll solicit our feature carver each year to add an additional block.
Roger Kimmel and Lowell Dunn will lead Christmas carving
projects for needy children. Our club projects for July and August will be ornaments
or toys that we’ll collect and distribute through a local church. By the
way, if you have any simple projects that kid would like, please let Roger know.
Rick Bishop and his wife Sally will investigate new patches
and perhaps T-shirts to commemorate our 25th year.
2006 Show Preparations in Full Swing
Our 2006 show is scheduled for March 4th and
5th. Rich Baginski has secured caricature carver Floyd Rhadigan as
our feature carver. Floyd will teach a 2 ½ day seminar. Tentative price is $140. This covers Floyd’s fee and
the room rent, and is a tremendous bargain. Spots are already going fast, so
contact Rich (513-697-1032) as soon as possible to reserve a spot.
A number of folks have already volunteered to help out
with the show. This is a great way to meet new people in the club. Our show tasks are broken down into bite-size chunks, so you can sign up for one or more and not have to
spend a lot of time on them. We still need help with posters, raffle tickets
and prizes, competition, and organizing chain-saw carving. Contact Kim McClinchy
(937-428-0547) or Monica Finan (937-436-0747) if you’d like to help.
MVWA Featured in The Appalachian Connection
Roger Keith from the The Appalachian Connection
newspaper visited our May meeting to drop off copies of the paper. The May-June
issue of the paper featured an article on MVWA, including pictures from our March show and interviews with club members. A few copies remain, and will be available at our June meeting.
Take the Bus to Davenport
The River Valley Woodcarvers are organizing their 6th
annual bus trip to the Affiliated Wood Carvers show in Davenport Iowa. The cost
is $190 (less for a full bus), and gets you bus transportation, two nights lodging, show ticket, continental breakfast and
a ticket to the awards banquet. Contact Mickey Huston at 513-734-2556 or see
the May-June Chip Chats page 75. Info is also available at the River Valley website
http://rivervalleycarvers.tripod.com/davenport_trip.htm.
Dues are Due
It’s that time of year again. Annual dues are due to our secretary-treasurer, John Macadam (513-423-9104). Dues are $12 per year, $18 per family. Some of you have won
free or reduced-price memberships by selling raffle tickets. Members should turn
in dues as soon as possible avoid being dropped from the club roster.
