Springfield Armory S.A.S.S.

The Springfield Armory S.A.S.S. is a Single Shot pistol that attaches to the frame of a Colt M1911 style pistol. It is available in two barrel lengths and in several calibers ranging from .357 magnum to .358 winchester.

To attach the S.A.S.S. Remove the slide from the M1911. Leaving the barrel open, slide the S.A.S.S. unit onto the slide and line up the unit to the slide stop. Insert the slide stop. Close the barrel. Insert the release mechanism into the magazine well. You are ready to go.

Caliber changes are made by removing the barrel pivot pin and pulling the barrel off. This is not unlike removing the barrel from some single shot shotguns. Springfield claims that this can be done in about Sixty seconds, but it took me a short while longer.

The current model of the S.A.S.S. is not compatable with the Colt Series 80 models. The trigger bar on the Colt bottoms out on the bottom of the S.A.S.S. unit and locks the trigger. My S.A.S.S. was purchased for a Series 80 frame, so this became a problem. A call to Springfield resulted in their "technical representative" telling me to remove all the Series 80 modifications whenever I wanted to shoot the gun. This annoyed me to no end, especially because the sales literature claimed to fit all M1911's and the sales lady told me that it would fit a Series 80.

To make an already long story shorter, I figured out that a slot could be cut into the S.A.S.S. to accomodate Series 80 Colts so I drove over to a local gunsmith and he milled it for me. It now works fine.

The S.A.S.S. unit is a sweet shooter. It is heavy, so it absorbs a lot of recoil, but it is well balanced. I have the 10.7" .44 magnum barrel. I shot everything from my 240 grain lead .44 special loads to my 300 grain jacketed magnum deer loads. It was sweet to shoot. I'm now saving up for a set of scope mounts and a 7mm-08 barrel.

Outside of the B.S. that Springfield put me through because of the Series 80, I love my S.A.S.S. I recommend to anyone this particular toy. My one regret is that Springfield does not have a 22 rimfire barrel.
