Classic Pistol

Classic Pistol is the best indoor range in the Philadelphia Area. It is a fifteen lane range with roomy armored and sound dampened shooting lanes. They make it easy to pick up your brass and the employees are knowledgable and personable. It is everything a range should be. They have a small lounge where you can sit down and have a soda. (My wife sometimes sits in there and reads if she does not want to shoot) All in all, the best indoor range and the best value. Let me put it to you this way. It is nearly an hour from my home and I consider the trip worth it. When I shoot there I get All my brass back. I get about forty percent of it back at Targetmasters. You can shoot anything from an air gun to .50BMG. They rent full auto guns, and they even have a suppressed model. Classic Pistol has a state-of-the-art HEPA filtration system installed. The air in the range is cleaner than in the lounge. It's just great.

They have NRA training classes and host visiting trainers too. Now they even do IDPA matches on the third tuesday. This is a club run by shooters for shooters. I cannot say enough good stuff about the place. You need to check it out for yourself.

They also have a pro shop with very competitive prices on firearms and accessories, including safes.

Classic Pistol is located in Bristol, Pa. Directions can be found off their web page.

    Targetmasters

Targetmasters is located on rt 202 about 2 miles south of rt 1. It is an indoor 25 yard pistol and archery range. They allow shotguns and 30-30 as well. You can rent full auto too. They have memberships for $100-300 a year depending on features and a single visit is $10.00. They offer firearms safety and hunters safety classes.

While their Saturday hours (open till 9:30) are good, they have slipped some. Due to the lack of a quality ventilation system they no longer permit the firing of lead bullets in their range. This makes me not interested in shooting there as I shoot lead bullets almost exclusively. The range is not as nice as CP and the lanes are narrower and not insulated. Add the fact that I loose too much of my brass and we have the recipe for a gun club I hardly frequent. It's a good club for the casual shooter, but when you get serious, its time to go elsewhere.

    Double Action Firing Range

Double Action is a newcomer to the area. It's a 40 foot wide 15 lane range with very good ventilation, better than most. They have a modest pro shop and are convenient to eastern delaware county. They are open till 9:00 PM late nights and will be doing IDPA. I have shot there and it is a pretty nice place. They also host IDPA run by yours truly so please come & check them out.

    Ommelanden Hunter Safety Training Center

Ommelanden is a State Run Range in the fair state of Delaware. They offer Skeet, Trap, Five Stand, Sporting Clays, Archery, and a Rifle/Pistol Range. (which was recently upgraded and improved) Prices are very good and it is open to the public. What a great place!

Ommelanden is just south of the RT13/40 split. Go down Rt 13 to Federal Lane. Follow Federal lane until it ends at rt 9. Go left about 400 yards on the right.

Ommelanden is open year round 9-4.(except holidays) Skeet starts at noon on sundays, sporting at 9:00. Give it a try. You'll love it.

    French Creek State Park

French Creek State Park is run by the Game Commission and paid for with Hunters license fees. (Which is one of the reasons I always buy a hunting and fishing license-even if I don't plan on going out) They have 25-50-100 yard ranges and a field for informal trap. No range officers are present, so be stout of heart. BE SURE to read the range rules before shooting. Often a game warden is present in plain clothes to assess fines and such. Five rounds in pistol, three in longarm. Remember it. (I have heard a rumor that handguns are now forbidden but I have not verified this)

I like to shoot blackpowder there because it is a fun place to pass a day shooting the breeze. Smoke poles are a great conversation piece.

The range is right off Pa Rt401. Email me for exact directions. Include where you are coming from.

    Delaware County Field and Stream

Delaware County Field and Stream Assn. is located in Aston Pa. I can never remember the directions, but it is relatively easy to find. The range facilities are pretty impressive; they offer trap, skeet, bird brain, (they call it sporting clays) Muzzleloading, Air Rifle, Pistol, Hand Traps, (my favorite) and some Archery.

Field and Stream has a lot of great range facilities and a pretty good canteen too. They have several great clubhouses; a main clubhouse, a clubhouse at the shotgun range, and a small house at the airgun range. They have great facilities. I am not a member but I may be one day.

The only bad things about the range is that the Pistol range is run by folks who are somewhat uppity NRA Bullseye shooters and there is a bias against defensive pistol shooters. (eg. five rounds in the gun, no rapid fire, 12.5 yd, 25yd, and 50yd fixed target stands) It is not the place to practice controlled pairs if you get my drift.

Lower Providence Rod and Gun Club

Lower Prov is a neat little gun club in Audobon Pa. I shoot IDPA matches there. They have trap, some neat looking Archery field courses, an outdoor Rifle/Pistol range, and an indoor pistol range. They also have a neat club house. They do Friday night trap shooting under the lights. Check this place out, they are looking for members. They usually have a booth at the Valley Forge Pa gun show.
