Rosalie (1937)

Nelson Eddy with Ilona Massey, although they didn't really play opposite each other.

Nelson Eddy, Eleanor Powell, Frank Morgan, Ray Belger.  First non-Jeanette MacDonald starring role Eddy had.  It did really well at the box office, I suspect for no other reason than Eddy was in it.  Too bad the movie is two hours long, and, boy, does the plot stink.  Powell is not a singer, but is a good dancer, if you're into tap.  I'm not.  There are a few quite funny scenes, but even Frank Morgan's character is saddled with so much stupidity, he's hard to stomach. Whoever had the bright idea to use "Nappy" should have been hit in the head with a shovel.  Nelson pulls off acting young (and not too bad at looking young, if you can see past the thick makeup), but didn't seem to know how to act as the plot unravelled pointlessly.  I blame the plot (naturally). I have noticed that I can always seem to tell when Nelson is playing a part that isn't making much sense to him.  The polls are split on whether he looks good in the cadet uniform, but I think he does.  The music is excellent, and Nelson manages to sing bass as well as tenor notes.  Sigh.  I'd sit through a lot to hear him sing--and here you do.  But the singing is worth it, at least for me. **
