Nelson Eddy, Ilona Massey, Elsa Manchester. His last film. Except for just having Nelson Eddy in it, not a great movie, with, worst of all, truly bad music, sung by the talented Eddy and the considerably less talented Massey (Nelson's third with Massey). This time, it appears to be Eddy who can't figure out what his part is supposed to be, although whether that has to do with the actor or the screenplay, I don't know. As I've noted before, when Nelson isn't comfortable with his character, it shows. There is one good song, but the recording quality on this movie is quite disappointing, so it's hard to enjoy, although it should be noted that he could still hold a note almost indefinitely, a fact they made fun of on multiple occasions (and I do like that he'll help mock himself). There is also a Russian Easter hymn which would be beautiful if they had recorded it properly. The music, recording quality notwithstanding, is generally very disappointing and the plot is pretty weak. Not a satisfying movie, but with a few select choice moments. I do like Nelson in that leather jacket, double crossed with belts, and his western garb in general even if he was getting on in years (46).* *
