Nelson Eddy, Jeanette MacDonald, John Barrymore, Herman Bing. This is reputed to have been MacDonald's favorite movie, demanding the most from her acting-wise. Although I think I've seen her act better, I don't think I've seen her sing better consistently through any movie. However much I don't favor her type of soprano, I give her full points for the agility of her voice. Nelson Eddy, who wasn't particularly youthful (36), pulls off youthful enthusiasm well and, naturally, with humor. I particularly like the cafe scene (note that that breath control he has works to his advantage talking, too) Herman Bing always cracks me up. John Barrymore is the most convincing "actor," not unnaturally. My greatest complaint is that Nelson Eddy is only on screen only 67 minutes in a 2 hour plus movie--not enough screen time for my tastes (and Eddy fans, who wrote in angrily to the studio at the time). The "made-up" opera sequence (from Tchaikovsky symphony) at the end is also quite good, in my opinion, and features a basso profundo (one who sings REALLY low). **** MUST SEE
