Girl of the Golden West (1938)

Nelson Eddy, as he often was, with Jeanette MacDonald.

Nelson Eddy, Jeanette MacDonald, Eddie Albert, Walter Pigeon and Leo Carillo--he's in Phantom of the Opera, too, but I like this role better.  Based on Bellasco's play that was the basis for Puccini's opera (though it doesn't use his music).  Why you would want to use an operatic-type plot for a western is a mystery to me.  It did well at the box office, but one critic summed it up so, "If you are the sort of person who can't get enough of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, then this movie is right up your alley."  Plot - weak.  Except for my Eddy obsession, I would have to say that the rival for Mary's affection was probably more deserving of it than Eddy's character.  But, Eddy sings, and I'd go with him myself [I watched Rose Marie with a friend and she said, "I don't see what she sees in him."  And I said, "What, didn't you hear him singing?"  Some people don't get it]--and I find his audacity charming, singing or no singing.  Eddy doesn't do melodrama with skill - going stiff (which may have been his own natural reaction to crisis), but I don't know that I favor JMcD's overacting any more.  There is some very good music (particularly "Senorita") and, again some cute scenes.  They were never heavier-handed with Nelson's makeup.  Eddy does a better Mexicano accent than JMcD does a pioneer's, but, hey, it could be worse.  ANY film with Nelson talking is better than ANY film where they don't give him dialogue.  I like Nelson in western garb (though not the Mexican stuff), too, makeup or no makeup.**
