Let Freedom Ring (1939)

Nelson Eddy and Virginia Bruce.

Nelson Eddy, Virginia Bruce, Lionel Barrymore, Charles Butterworth.  Hokey superpatriotic western melodrama which happens to be charming and funny.  Nelson is the only one who really sings in the film, and he sings well.  There is a believable "acting drunk" scene and a fight scene [lauded at the time] that looks kinda foolish in amongst all the choreography we have today, but, except for the obvious pretend hits in the close-ups, is probably more like real people fight.  There's a side character, played by an Charles Butterworth, who is quite humorous.  The female lead is something of the melodrama stereotype, but it's fresh enough not to be grating.  Except for the fits of overblown patriotism that all of the protagonists are prone to in this film, I liked it and thought Eddy did a good job with this film.***    MUST SEE
